I dont have blu-ray yet, just curious

Looking for regular dvd player with all regions!

Basically something that will play it all! DVD-R's , Pal, whatever!

Check Amazon.. Multi region players can come as cheap as $40. I got one to play my R2 re-imaged Space:1999 Year 1 set.

Check the reviews.. Some break after a few years, but, hey.. what's $40..? Just buy another.

The best regarded players that can do all regions and convert PAL to NTSC are ones made by Oppo. They can play anything, some can even play DVD-Audio discs and SACDs. You can't buy them in stores, but are easily available on line at places like Amazon.

I have a Yamaha DV-S5650 that does PAL and had a remote hack to make it all region. It's a great solid well made player that does a great job. I'd recommend it, but it's unfortunately long out of production. When it finally dies on me (hopefully not soon, it's still going strong after about 6 years so far) I'll look into an Oppo myself.

Blu-ray has only 3 regions compared to DVD (region A, B and C). And NTSC and PAL are not an issue, high def is high def (but some Blu-ray discs have extras, and rarely menus, in standard definition, where PAL/NTSC could be an issue). I'm not sure if any Blu-ray players can play all three regions, I don't think so, but I think there is an Oppo BD player that will be able to do it (don't know if it's out yet though, I haven't really been keeping up with developments)

I got a cheapie one that plays .wmv files. It goes into this weird mode where the lights on the front of the machine turn into a grid. I have no idea why it does that.

Back in the late 90's I bought a General Electric DVD player/karaoke machine

                That thing was fantastic !!!

It was as big as a VCR

It would play ANY region ... NTSC - PAL .... hell, it would even play a pizza pie if you put it in

It finally petered out a few years ago... only because it gave me like 100,000,000 hours of service.

I really miss that machine --- and of course you can't buy them today.

Seems like the quality of DVD players is going down nowadays.

Yea, they're tiny and most are cheap --- but they're crap

Hey! Mine's a GE! No karaoke, but it's got a three disk CD changer.

To keep the costs down they're all printed circuits; nothing solid state. Cheap, but when something goes it usually takes the whole system with it. (So, they WORK the same as the older ones, but they're unrepairable.)

I have a Pioneer player that plays WMV files as well as avi, I think a few other brands can play wmv as well.

BTW, if the DVD player box has the DIVX logo, it should play most (but not all) avi files. My Pioneer can play all but the newest avi codecs. Most of the avi torrents I download play fine on it, via it's handy USB port (no need to burn discs to play the files on the player)
