I was painting an apartment exterior when the news came over the radio. An older guy I was working with almost fell off the ladder trying to get down to turn up the radio. He had tears in his eyes. I liked him but was more affected when I heard the news of John Lennon's death.

Time and memory are weird. I would swear that Elvis died, the Sex Pistols toured the US and Mancini killed that guy all in the same summer.

It was around May 25, 1977 (the date that Elvis did a concert in Rochester). I was a kid who was into Star Trek, Science Fiction, Monster Movies, cartoons and was really looking forward to seeing this movie I heard about called Star Wars. I didn't know Elvis Presley from a hole in the wall. Never heard of him.

As fate would have it, my boy scout troupe was on a field trip to the Rochester Airport. When we were there, a buzz started to develop that a plane that had Elvis had landed and he was in the airport.

I don't remember the exact order of events but we all ended up at the place where cars leave from the airport. There was a good size group of people. And soon this Limo drove by and there was plenty of screams and cheers and all I saw was a hand waving at us out of the open window in back seat of the limo.

Coming home, I had to ask mom if she ever heard of Elvis Presley and she told me all about him. She was sort of a fan but with my parents, Rock and Roll was not a big thing with them in particular.

And that was the last I thought about Elvis, until he died and it was all over the place.

We were on holiday in The Netherlands.
My Mom was devastated. She was (and is) a big fan.

Years later, her new idol was Freddy Mercury.
She has no luck in picking favourites, I guess....
