    Steven Spielberg next film

    Spielberg hops onto ‘Harvey’ remake
Original 1950 classic starred James Stewart

LOS ANGELES - Steven Spielberg has a giant rabbit on his mind for his next film.

Spielberg is directing a remake of the James Stewart classic "Harvey," the story of a big-hearted eccentric who's branded a crackpot for claiming to have a 6-foot-tall invisible rabbit as his best buddy.

Casting is just getting started, with production expected to begin early next year.

The new version will be a contemporary update of Stewart's 1950 film, which was based on Mary Chase's Pulitzer Prize-winning play.

The film is a co-production between Spielberg's DreamWorks Studio and 20th Century Fox. A release date has not been announced, but a Fox spokesman said the studio is looking to have the film in theaters late next year.

Spielberg, along with Tom Hanks, has another (what is probably another great epic) 10 part mini-series to begin in March 2010 on HBO called "The Pacific." It's based on the true story of the U.S. Marines who fought in the Pacific Theater of Operations in Word War II.

I'm not sure Harvey will work nowadays like it did back then. In the era of the original, a guy who spoke to an "invisible friend" was an oddity...which the film banked on. Now....I can walk down to the corner of my street and if I cant find somebody talking to an invisible buddy then somethings wrong!!

It's pretty sad when even Spielberg can't come up with an original idea.

            Hmmmm....

Starring Wil Ferrel. Wait for it! Or a Jonas brother. (Is one of 'em hitting the end of the "awwww, how cute!" phase yet?) With Christopher Walken as Harvey.

Wait. Wasn't that called "Donnie Darko?"

Why do I have visions of Adam Sandler baby talking to a invisible bunny??

Well, the movie was based on a stage play, so I don't mind so much the re-do. It's the "modern" part that always gets me.
                    It's all good!

I wish Spielberg would get into horror again. I think Jaws showed a side of him, as a director, we so seldom see.

With the F/X of today do you think he could remake JAWs ?

Personally, I think most people I know who love Jaws are a lot more entertained by the chemistry between the actors and characters than the shark effects. You could possibly improve the effects today, but that chemistry will be almost impossible to duplicate.

I'm kind of interested to see Spielberg take on a simple character driven story like "Harvey", but my guess is that they're going to try and alter it to work with lots of special effects and more plot.

Definitely, the three actors make Jaws the truly great film that it is. It would still be really good, but their chemistry makes it.
