I will always enjoy my stuff and experiences from when I was a kid. My wife doesn't share the same collecting love that I have, but she understands it. The kids love it.

How old is too old for a Toy hobby?

I think 90 years old is too old to start collecting.
I mean, you're never going to "collect 'em all!" that way, right?.

Hmmmm....
I don't think it's a real problem any more:
2008: The Year the Geeks Took Over | Cracked.com
>Do you think friends or family look down on your hobby?
My family doesn't. They're where I get it from, since EVERYONE in the house when I was a kid.... from me, to my mom, right up to my grandparents.... LOVED comic books, cartoons, monster movies. Some of the folks at work try; but you just have to ask them to justify THEIR interests. (I can argue some sort of socially or intellectually redeeming quality to most comic books. Good luck doing that with Nascar, American Idol and beer.)
>we watch cartoons made for kids,
Compared to most movies and sitcoms, they're AT WORST no stupider.
>Will we ever reach an age where we stop?
I know I won't. Haven't yet; and I'm 38. I think it's 'cos my affection for this stuff is genuine. I wasn't TOLD I like any of it. It wasn't part of my "youthful identity." I like comics 'cos I like comics. My tastes have changed a bit, but I still like comics. I like cartoons and figures, and model kits the same. Always did. (It's why I don't have a closet full of stuff I look at and think "why'd I ever buy THAT?")
There's actually a good discussion of that sort of attitude, pertaining to music, in the movie "Metal: A Headbanger's Journey."

When I was in my teens and still buying toys I thought about whether I should give this up to "save face" with friends and family who were starting to think I was a bit nutty with my hobby. I decided then and there that this was something I enjoy, and its not hurting anyone...so if somebodies got a problem with it they can go pound sand! Still feel the same way.
Looking back now over the years, I can see where my time, money, and energy went. I'll bet theres a lot of folks with different "adult" hobbies who cant say that!!"Crayons taste like purple!"Comment

It also ties in to my preference for comics and tv/movies from a particular time period as well. For me, anyway, they all go together.
(Lucky for me, my wife understands and after several years of "training", now agrees completely with my view of "the better old days".)

I get flak for it sometimes but couldn't really care less. Alot of the people who say negative things to me about my hobby are also the same people who spend countless hours and dollars on booze, drugs or other vices that are certainly much more harmful than toy collecting. But of course they view those activities as being "grown up", heh. I actually tend to feel a little bit sorry for those adults who've just completely let go of the child within them and can't at least appreciate what something like a toy hobby can mean for someone. Too often they don't realise that not every toy collector is some emotionally stunted weirdo!Comment
