I haven't really tried to watch Rockford as an adult, but it was a staple at my house, and I dug the theme song. James Garner is one of those charming actors who I will watch in anything.

From what I remember about the show, this is a bad idea. I wouldn't doubt the show was developed FOR Garner, so a remake without him is just stupid.

so we've had Munsters,Addams Family, Brady Bunch, I Spy, Dukes of Hazzard, Bewitched, A-team is being made, Knight Rider, BSG, Get Smart, Wild Wild West. I'm sure i'm missing others but only a few have been watchable. Hollywood sucks and this is why i like to watch classic shows.
Don't forget 'Dragnet' with the guy from 'Married with Children'.. I agree on just sticking with the classics.

Basically, no one's creative (or gutsy..) enough these days to create anything memorable and original.

OR, with all the DVD sets out there, cable channels showing classics, not being tied down to only 3-4 channels like we were back 30-40yrs ago, we're all just.., not interested.

It's gutsy I'd think. So much money is involved in making a film that nobody can afford to take a risk. A known name, even one that really no longer has any audience appeal (like.... oh, Asteroids) is a safer bet than something new. That's why you get that name slapped on the generic film too; it's safer to make something you know the audience will watch rather than change the formula (...and NOT have something blow up ina tunnel....?) and risk cheesing of the audience.

'Course; I think the audience is part of the problem too. People WANT the same old same old. Look how excited people get when a movie featuring their favourite character is annunced. That's not trying something new; that's sticking with the old and safe. And sometimes I wonder how the audience would react to something ACTUALLY new. People have been pandered to for a while; look at how much people complain if something isn't EXACTLY right in a film. (And at the strange things that get stuck in peoples' craws....) Would they be happy about a genuine surprise?

                  Sometimes I have my doubts....

                  Don C.

There's room today for tv remakes...small and big screen...but Rockford was a 70's "cop"...I don't know how it will play today?

Garner is still acting he does halmark films

If you are intimating James Garner couldn't act you must never have seen support your local gunfighter or his part in the great escape

Rockford was fun becuase he was a quirky PI not in the peter gunn mold. if it hadn't worked we woudl never have seen Magnum
