Exactly, I never answer the door otherwise. Same goes with the phone. If caller ID displays a number I don't know (or even worse, "unknown" or "blocked" ), you're leaving a message (or not) because I'm not answering.

            Unbelievable. Sorry, 'bout that. Yuck.

              Thanks for the laughs folks!

I too have gotten into the habit of not letting anyone in the door...but this lady and her kid looked so darn ...well, pathetic for lack of a better word, that I felt sorry for them. Next time, I'll just turn the hose on them!!

This used to be a great neighborhood when I moved in 15 years ago. Quiet, and full of retired folks. the only issue I ever had was I couldnt do anything loud outside (like work on my cars/trucks or mow tha lawn after 6pm, because they all went to bed around then (not kidding!). As they moved out, whether to a home, or the big home in the sky, their homes were sold to folks who rented them out. With a few notable exceptions the same thing would inevitably happen,a person, or a family moves in...cant afford the rent (rental rates in Calgary have been insane for years) and start bringing in more people to pay the rent. Pretty soon you've got a dozen people in a basement suite, and as the tensions rise , so does the problems. Once the flophouse mentality set in, the drug dealers and hookers seemed to follow! In the last ten years this area has gone from being an idealic older neighborhood to becoming a slum. Gang wars, murders...you name it, its happening here on a regular basis. Plus the city, in its infinite wisdom, rezoned the area for maximum density housing, so now when something new is built its usually a 8 plex..with no parking except the street, and the same flophouse mentality seems to be permeating the residents of these buildings.
Two years ago, a Center for Newcomers School was opened, and the City or Province (or both) decided to situate a large group of refugees here from the Sudan, with the thinking that it might push out the criminal element. Sadly, this backfired, and it seems the criminals have infiltrated the sudanese community...making things even worse.

I feel bad for the families in the area, especially with young kids who are growing up seeing things nobody should encounter. I grew up in a very rural community so I cant even begin to imagine the affect this stuff is having on these kids. I felt sorry for that lady and her kid....but I literally got crapped on for feeling charitable. That just makes me feel worse. Especially when I realize that my neighbours...the ones who have been here for a while and used to care about the area....probably feel the same way, and in doing so are adding to the problems of the area.

              What can you do?

When I think of Calgary ... I think of beautiful, scenic, modern yet historic and just all around nice.

It hard to grasp there's "bumbs" everywhere including Canada.

I let a dog in, that got away from some one up the street. Other than that no.

Strange that some people said they would let a cop in. How quick people are taken in by a uniform.

Damn, that's sad, and scary, that something like that can happen to a nice quiet neighbourhood in such a relatively short period of time.

Bad thing to have happen, but to be honest, if it happened to one of my friends I would be laughing pretty hard.
