Why are there no family sitcoms on these days?

Why do you think there are no family shows on regular TV? Actually even cable? Of course I see that reality TV took over, but what programs do your children watch? Are there some family programs on now that I'm not aware of? Any coming soon that you know of? My kids are watching my old Fav's on dvd like wonder years & Brady bunch, but I don't know of any current quality family programs.

What i mean by family programs are like shows from the past that did so well, were so popular.

    Growing Pains

    Family Ties

    Whos the boss

    Wonder Years

    Different Strokes

    All in the family

    Webster

    Brady Brunch

    Good Times

Well the list goes on & on!!

      Family Shows

I would think that anything on now would pretty much be a re-hash of a classic. There will never be another show like Wonder Years, or Family Ties, or even Home Improvement. That was one I kinda liked. There is The Bill Engval Show on TBS, but even that won't ever be anything like any of the classics...I've seen it, it's funny, I like Bill Engval, he's a funny guy...

Apart from the fact that the current fads are still in effect (cop shows and reality shows), my ( based solely on opinion)theory comes down to two things....

        Money and demographics...

The reality stuff is WAY cheaper to produce (and no escalating actor salaries).

More alarming (to MY family anyway) is the increasing number of "dark" and angsty shows which may be attributed (at least partially) to demographics. The "new crop" of producers/directors don't want "their father's style" TV.... too kitchy...not edgy enough.. doesn't "push the envelope" enough.. isn't "relevant."

Pity they haven't noticed that the envelope is just about shredded by now and all of the talent is leaking out...

Over the past few years my wife and I have been amassing almost every good 60s/70s/80's TV show we can on DVD... We find that we've been watching "regular" TV less and less (and enjoying it less when we do).

Whether it's family shows like you've listed or even action/adventure shows made "back in the day", the style that at least MY family likes is definitely viewed as "a thing of the past" by the young creative types of today...

Will the trend change?? Who knows? Even if it does, WE might be too old to enjoy it if and when it does.

Until then, I'll just reach for a DVD ....

(Just my opinion, of course ... )

Have you forgotten the amazing blandness that is "According to Jim"?

I always thought family shows were boring.

Most people can just look in their own house and see a live family show right before their eyes.

People want to see something different instead of the same old family dilemma stories rehashed over and over for new shows.

Reality shows = cheap to make and hugh profits.

Family shows or sitcoms. Too many conflicting egos with too large salaries = lower profits.
Too many toys. Not enough space!

ABC seemed to rule the family sitcom toward the end and when they dropped them, that was "all she wrote".

Grounded For Life was great fun while it lasted, that Michael Rappaport show was entertaining, but I can't think of a current show, you're right.

Yeah, "The War at Home". Agreed, both were pretty durned funny.

Like anything else it's a different audience out there. Just look at things that constituted "a very special episode" back in the day. Some of that stuff (sex specifically) wouldn't even rate now.
