    Jim Jones documentary

I'm watching a special about Jim Jones and Jonestown and am amazed how he could have led all of those people to their deaths. So many little kids were killed at Jonestown. What do you think people see in a leader that totally takes them in like a Jim jones or Hitler? I was just a small kid when this took place so I am getting quite an education. did you realize he still has followers??? ***??

WOW. . . .no I didn't realize he still had followers. I have watched a few docos on him over the past couple of years on the History channel.

Amazing gunning down that senator or congressman and Journos! Unbelievable stuff.

I can remember it from my childhood as well. . . .but only vaguley.

I didn't realize there were still followers. Given the documentation of it all, they must believe in some grand conspiracy and are in complete denial of the historical events. No other explanation apart from that scenario.

As far as what people see in a Stooge like that sorry excuse for a human, I can't begin to imagine.

I've never been a joiner, so those kind of things perplex me. 9/10ths of all human activity merits a curious tilt
of the head from me, as if I were from another planet marveling at something completely foreign to me.

Age has born me out, but all along the path of my life people were extremely hard-pressed to make me either patriotic or religious. Not that I hold disdain for either quality, just that I can smell manipulation and I have paid a price for not falling for it, but only in the short-term and nothing like those who joined in.

History shows us that a majority can be colossally and monumentally wrong and it takes a wise-soul to be able to navigate it all. (Not that I'm a wise-soul, but I've seen plenty of people fall for something I begged them not to.)

In a commune I'd imagine that it's pretty easy to control information, especially back when the news was a paper, or on at six 0'clock.
Warren Jeffs was able to lead his group even with modern communications like cellphones, internet, CNN...

Belief is a weird thing. We need to justify our actions and our beliefs, so following can be an easy thing at times. Very easy during hard times.

I feel the need to clarify that I am not opposed to being either religious or patriotic. I'm just saying that being either requires an internal moral compass that can spot those who would manipulate either motivation for their own gain. It's not very easy to separate the wheat from the chaff in either case and all through History there have been those who could make the unreasonable seem mainstream by appealing to those basic motivations.

In simplistic terms, I had school spirit enough to want to give all I could to win a game, but not enough to join the gang in pouring out our school's name in diesel on a rival team's home field. You get the difference, I'm sure.
