    MEGO: OLD vs. NEW?

Ok so here is my question, with what looks to be a sure thing as far as a new line of mego figures coming out by next year I was wondering how (if any) will this affect the prices of vintage mego's? I have seen some very nice collectibles on ebay and on the museum in the last few months and was wondering if this is due to our poor economy and people just need extra funds or because of the new line in the horizon.

Would one think they would increase in value or visa versa? What if they only released boxed figures, then would carded figures be worth more? Do you think it would not change the value of older pieces at all?

Would like to hear what you think and why.....

I think that the vintage market will continue to be strong.
There will be just be more interest and competition, IMHO

i think it will affect the cheaper priced original moc but the scarce ones will still command a good price.

Might make a few waves to start out with but for myself even my custom figures have vintage mego bodies cause they can never beat an original.

Speaking of the originals,I noticed the release of the new stuff hasn't hurt the price of the old stuff too much.

I don't think it will affect it much. They aren't and can't ever be a substitue for the true OG Megos.

It's gonna be the same as it is now.

The vintage ones will command a high price because theres fewer of them around.

The newer ones will probably get some good prices when they first come out but then after they flood the market they'll go for a very reasonable price.

I Love the Vintage MEGOs because they're the ones from my childhood and they will hold the most meaning for me

As with most things, quality and similarities with the originals, both in appearance and packaging, will play a big role in how lines are impacted. Plus you have to consider the submarkets of repro parts and boxes. At this stage we have to assume the Trek figures are the "Pre-Mego" sneak peak of what we will get in terms of quality. My initial impression is prices for vintage loose specimens will drop if these figures are exactly the same in appearance. I think collectors underestimate the allure that this product WILL BE A MEGO and that it will be NEW and the nostalgia of buying one new again off the shelf could be a similar experience as getting a vintage one. We'll just have to see how closely they resemble each other.

The ironic (and satisfying part) is that for someone (assuming not ALL of the products are bought by us nostalgic megophiles), these new Megos will be THEIR originals..... their firsts...

And the cycle repeats .... as it should.

That's a great point. That's why I say this would be Marty Abrams and Mego reborn. Not just a company emulating Mego. This will be very interesting.

I don't care about a new company called "Mego"... or who owns
that company that is called "Mego".

I don't care if a figure is a day old..or if that figure is 30 years old.

My favorite "Mego" figures are the ones that LOOK LIKE MEGOS.

Now what "looks like a Mego" to me, may be different than what
a mego looks like to someone else.

I'm pretty flexible in that regard,
and it suits me well, because that's means a lot more "Mego" for me.

Everytime there are new 8 inch scale products being brought on to
the market, I am that much better off.

                          Amen.

I had some great luck about five years ago, I found a guy online in Canada selling MOC Scotty, Uhura and McCoy and snagged all three at once. It was a bit pricey but worth it since I hadn't, and still have not, seen any that were in such excellent shape.

When they showed up on my doorstep, THAT was a Mego day!

I think most collectors hold more fondness for the things they grew up with than new things coming out when they're adults. I get psyched when I see vintage SF toys and trading cards at conventions....even though I have them. I still stop and look.
