Manfred Mann made that song, despite Bruce writing it. I will admit the Boss knocks it out of the park live though.

It's funny, though
I never knew about the Springsteen version until after I heard and loved the Mann's version.
I always thought the Mann's version was freakie and out of this world (the music and lyrics) and that's what made it appealing to me.
After I heard the Springsteen version, it was a totally different story and all those freakie lyrics suddenly made sense coming from Bruce's mouth.
Which is best ?
For nostalgia's sake I say the Mann's version.
For a great song's sake I say the Springsteen version.Comment

I was more familiar with the Manfred Mann version growing up but Springsteen's seems to get more attention nowadays.Think OUTSIDE the Box! For the BEST in Repro & Custom Packaging!Comment

Manfred Mann, definitely.
This was the first time i've ever heard the Springsten version and to me they sound like 2 totally different songs.
I think the deuce/****** thing must be an American phenomenon as we don't use the word ****** here in the UK.
