I actually dislike them equally. If I had to pick one, I'd go with the Boss.

Oh Manfred Mann all the way. I grew up with that song. It blew my mind when I was told in the early 80's that Springsteen wrote it. It is hardly his style. One of Manfred Mann's true classics! I think they certainly made it their own.

Manfred Mann's version gets stuck in your head and won't go away. And then there's the whole "wrapped up like a deuce" that everyone interprets as a feminine hygiene product.

But Bruce is in his mumbling mode in his version, and when he does that it sounds like he's got a mouthful of popcorn and trying to sing.

So I'm with Azrak, neither. But at least Bruce is annoying in a less intrusive way.

In Bruce's original version, he mentions, "cut loose like a deuce" two or three times in the chorus. "Deuce" referring to a little deuce coupe, like in the Beach Boys song.

Mann took a lot of liberties with the lyrics, and changed that line to "revved up like a deuce", which he repeats constantly thru the song. And he pronounces deuce like ******, which is were the confusion sets in.

Of course Mann's version got about a million times more airplay than Bruce's. Not surprising, since the song is from Bruce's first album and he wasn't getting airplay anyway.

It's definitely not amongst my favorites of Bruce's catalog, but it's fun in concert. And I do like the funkiness of Bruce's studio version.

a storng argument for either can be made. as a pop tune Manfred mann's version is great but Sptringstein as the writer has more heart in the performance.

Kind of like All along the watchtower. The Hendrix version is edgy and rocks but when it;s performed by then man who wrote it (Bob Dylan) it has a completely different feel to it.

and yes I am putting Springstein in the same category as Bob Dylan

I went back and forth between digging these women and laughing at the absolutely silly lack of subtlety. Most I thought that video was freakin' hilarious.

I've always liked Springsteen, but for this one I have to go with Manfred Mann. I have no clue why either. I guess I like it in an Alan Parsons Project kind of way.

                        Bruce's, without a doubt.

                        I love the album version,
but hearing it live is even better.

An abridged live version is available on Bruce's VH-1's Storytellers episode,
as well as his story about the difference between the two versions.

Never liked the song until I heard Bruce's version. Of course, Springsteen is also one of my all time favorites, too.
