I just got back from seeing the Year One movie, but this thread isnt about the film.
It used to be I would hold off on seeing family films, mainly because I always seemed to end up sitting near the family with the crying baby, the bored four year old who keeps asking questions throughout the movie, or the family with the kids with small bladders that are constantly "sneaking" past you to get to the bathroom. Not a big deal. I dont blame anybody, its just the way it is. I like kids just fine, and am not against families in any way shape or form. I realize I'm a bit of a codger, and I adjust my viewing habits. I wait for the movie to be around for a while, then go when the crowds are smaller.
At tonights showing, the crowd was predominantly between the ages of 15 and 20 roughly. It wasnt large...the theater was probably half full. With a crowd this age, once the film starts everybody usually shuts up and watches the movie right? Not anymore. Now, when the lights go down, the cell phones light up, and you hear the "pudda pudda pudda" sound of hundreds of thumbs texting messages!!! I noticed this during a lot of films recently, only those movies had more variety to the crowd so it wasnt so prevelant. Tonight...at one point, I looked down the rows ahead of me and EVERY SINGLE PERSON under the age of say 20 was texting. It was insane. Why pay over 12 bucks....way more with concession, to text your buddy about how greasy the popcorn is??? The film was entertaining, so it wasnt that they were bored....!?
I noticed the same thing at the doctors office the other day. A pretty young lady with a just walking age young one came in and sat down. Despite the signs saying to turn off your cell phone, and the repreated warnings of the nurses, this lady started texting at speeds even the Flash couldnt comprehend. During this the kid, a cute little girl, was waddling about knocking over stuff, falling down and crying, stealing toys from other kids in the playpen thing, and according to one old ladies loud report, thoroughly crapping her diapers. The mom didnt even look up? Just kept thumbing away like the fate of the world rested on her next typed message!?
Maybe I'm just old, but I really do not get it. These kids are just glued to their phones, texting away about who knows what, ignoring the world as a whole. When I was a kid I would have HATED such a device. Even know, I dont text (although...thinking about it...this little rant could be construed as the same thing?).
