Where did all the Fire Flys go?

Back in the 70's we could go outside on a June night and the yard would be ablaze with Fire Flys or Lightning Bugs. You could easily catch dozens of them. Have not seen many lately. Tonight we saw all of 6. My kids caught them and than let them go.

    Where have they all gone?
Too many toys. Not enough space!

I think they're all in my backyard. My nephew was catching them left and right last night.

We still see them in our backyard, but there does seem to be less around than there used to be.

I haven't seen Fire flys for a long time. I remember when I lived in Texas they were everywhere. I used to love catching them as a kid. It was alot of fun

It's been colder than normal around here, keeping them down.

I grew up on Long Island NY. During the 70's there were tons of fire flys. The 80's decent amount! Hardly any in the 90's, when i went back last July for a vacation i didn't see any. I always wondered why that was, I guess i'll research that! Now I live in Las Vegas, none out here! I do have a Scorpion problem though! We found at least 15 in our house over the past 2 years, been stung once, the ******* stung me on the wrist, my hand was dead for a week! We just caught one two days ago! If I ever learn how to upload photo's, i'll put the scorpion on here!

                Hmmmm....

There was an aritcle a month or so back in National Geographic about this. They've been dying out for a few reasons; one of which is sharing breeding grounds with mosquitoes. Since we've been doing stuff to cut down on the numbers of mosquitoes (out of concern for diseases like West Nile) we've been cutting down on fireflies as well.

It's funny, I haven't seen any in years and years, but when we moved to our current house several years ago, I was happily surprised to see them in our back yard. Brought back a lot of memories of when I was a kid (the last time I had seen them). Living in a kind of rural "cottage country" area has some little advantages like that I suppose.

I still see a few here. The kids really enjoy looking out for them.
                        It's all good!

I thought about that this weekend. I saw the first one I had seen all year, and I usually mow my yard well after dusk. They've definitely decreased in numbers around here since I was a lad. I used to catch them by the jar full!!!
