What I dont get...Chavez keeps pulling this stuff, yet these companies continue to hang around. For example the oil companies, even though Chavez basically confiscated all the refineries, compressor stations, etc., and cut the companies who formerly owned them royalties to like 1 %, these morons keep working there!!!??? If that was my company I would've shut her down and pulled everybody out of that country before Chavez woke up and ate his Corn Flakes the next day.

I was at an oil show here in Calgary just the other day, and a guy I used to work with offered me a job with his company doing what I used to do, only I would have to work in Venezuala instead of Alberta. If I had taken the job, I would live in a camp and armed guards would drive me and the rest of the crew to work each morning and then back to the camp at night...Gee who wouldnt want to do that? Sometimes money just isnt enough!

OK, Chavez might be a bit OTT, but I can follow his reasoning.
Because companies shy away from massive amounts of sugar now, they use artificial flavourings. Often, these "non-sugar" substances are just as unhealthy as sugar.

The Orient is starting to step away from both versions ("sugar" and "artificial flavours") and uses Stevia, which is a natural sweetener found in flowers.
It's good for the bees, and good for humans.

People have been becoming more allergic to all the additives we put in food and drinks, it's becoming a serious problem. I get ill from drinking "sugar free".

Part of Chavez's reasoning might be political, but as for health issues, there's a lot of junk in "sugar free" stuff.
Stevia is not yet in use in Western countries (but it won't take too long, I think), because the "sugar lobby" doesn't want to lose millions.....

And as this is my 2,000th post, I'd like to raise a glass of Belgian Beer to you all!

Yeah - I think we're going to look back on artificial sweeteners in the future and think it was a pretty terrible idea.

My wife's allergic to most artificial flavourings and aromas, and I spend hours in the supermarket, trying to find stuff that is still "clean". It's getting pretty hard. Even things like bacon, which has plenty of flavour on its own, has it.
As if things in in the old days had no flavour?

I mean, even potato chips with salt&pepper have "pepper extract". Never knew plain old pepper was such a rare commodity these days...
