      Bzzzzap no resistance easy cuffing.

Tasers are not without their dangers and side effects (esp. for people with heart conditions). I don't blame officers for using pepper spray, billy clubs, tasers, even their firearms when it's necessary and (especially) when their own lives and safety is endangered, but this seems excessive.

I have no doubt that this robust officer could have arrested this elderly lady without tasering her.

Sadly, I suspect this officer may be one of the many who simply enjoys tasering people (certainly some people enjoy SEEING people tortured in this way). Believe me, I've known officers who seemed to experience a kind of glee at the opportunity to do such things. When I was younger (I worked on some prison and jail medical staffs) I used to kind of enjoy watching inmate "beat downs." Thank God I outgrew that.

          BTW, this thread is political...

I've never been much of a fan of "local" rural Police.

They all seem to be bullies acting out their fantasy's in real life.

City cops and Staties are different because they're screened a lot better.

Many local police think they're god

This situation could have easily been avoided if he had just let here go from the start.
He can tell she wasn't drinking and didn't have any outstanding warrents against her.
Just let her go, keep her plate number and mail her the ticket.

Many local police are just plain nasty people.
I had a local cop pull his gun on me once because he thought I was reaching for "something".
In reality I was just picking up my pants like 99.999% of all human men when they get out of the car.

If all local rural police were fired and replaced with Staties there would be a lot less of this, imo.

He should have called ni the AARP Team to load thier rifles with warm milk! She would have been out in seconds! Really I can see pushing her away from the road but to taser her, come on. He could have handcuffed her. Older people are on a lot of medications and throwing a taser in the mix could have been much more deadly than say a broken arm. Besides who knows if she was wearing her Depends that day. I wouldn't want to have to clean her up. Yes the elderly do have to abide by the law but in a confrontation the rules are a little lighter, especailly against a grandma.
Besides he was probably just worried that she would run and there was no way he could have caught her.

I certainly understand some feelings here regarding her age and the way he handled her. But she was being uncooperative and her age doesn't give her license to be that way. If he would had muscled her into his squad car, she could have sustained serious injury. As ugly as it looks, I think he took the first best option to get her to cooperate. You also have to remember we're getting the edited version. He tried for over five minutes to reason with her so it wasn't like it was a snap decision. If she had a heart condition then the responsibility was on HER to convey that and also NOT to insight an argument that could compromise her condition. It's just an unfortunate situation that could have been avoided...mostly by her. I can picture a ton of parodies coming from this... it was just crazy!

Makes no sense to me that people have all these
opinions that have to do with assuming how the officer felt
or what COULD have happened with a taser or a handcuff.

                      Reality check: It doesn't matter.

Resist arrest, get warned, get tasered...it makes perfect sense.

This IS law enforcement...not the Good Ship Lollipop.

The world isn't perfect though. Not every one is going to think
it's "the right thing". Such is life.

This cop was nasty from the start.

Like most cops, he has no people skills -- which should be a requirement on all police forces.

Do we really want cops to act like the guestapo ?

Maybe tomorrow it might be somebody here's mother.

It wouldn't be too funny if you knew the person.

And Law Enforcement will use this as an example of how NOT to handle similar situations. If you can't de-escalate or at the very least, not play into crazy granny's hand, you have missed a lesson somewhere along the way. Pure and simple, he had other options and failed to see them. He let her dictate the outcome, something that never should be done. This is an epic failure of Law Enforcement 101. I'm pretty sure, despite the PR cover your butt statements, that this guy is getting teased mercilessly by his fellow Officers.

Look, similar situations play out all across the country, every day. You know why you don't hear about them? Because most Officers have training and sense enough to take these kind of nut bag scenarios from YouTube fodder to routine traffic stop. That's all this should have been.

Law enforcement is not cut and dried and this does not make sense. Every situation is different when it comes to dealing with the public. I was talking with a few policemen this morning while in a courthouse and even they were shaking their heads at this.
Anyway what's done is done whether you agree with it or not.
I have a licence to carry a gun so I should right? Makes perfect sense but I don't. In certain situations I do but 90% of the time I don't need to. Having a cool head and being able to talk with someone usually prevails.

                                Mike----as far as I'm concerned you're fortunate
this ISN'T the Gestapo in our country...law enforcement
ain't an easy job---and yes officers can be "on edge".

AND THOSE are the kind of people I want
                                intimidating criminals---and would be criminals.
                                It ain't a Macy's countergirl job here.

...as far as I'm concerned, you're making excuses
for a woman who was horrid from the start.

If it was MY mother (rest her soul), I would have asked her why
                                she was being so beligerent.

I also would have pondered whether she should be driving at all
if that how she was going to handle a routine pullover.
