collecting cereal boxes

Anyone here into collecting cereal boxes? I do not personally consider myself a real collector of cereal boxes although I have maybe around 25 or so that I have saved. My question is for those that do collect is what is the best way to keep them? Broken down and folded at the seams or left attached together? The later of the two of course takes up more space. Also an empty box or the box completely unopened with the cereal still in the box? Or does any of that even matter? Just wondering.

I've got a few, maybe around 10 but nothing great. I store mine folded. A friend of mine collects them and I think he stores his folded too. My grail would be an early 70s Freakies box. I saw one go for over $1,200 a few years ago.

The really hardcore collectors buy unopened boxes, open them up and eat the whole bag of old cereal, then keep the outer box.

Hey T, Thanks for the reply and for the help. That was kind of the same lines that I was thinking to about folding them. I just wasn't really sure though. I just want to make sure that I do it right. I would have to find out later down the line that I folded a grail piece or something. It is hard to imagine one keeping the boxes unopened and in tact as this would start to take up quite some space if one was a real serious collector. I have managed to do this so far. Then again I only have like 25 boxes so we are not talking about that much space so far. Since I know that this is the thing to do I will fold all of my future cereal boxes. In turn I will take the cereal out and give it to a food pantry so someone can benefit from it. I already have too much cereal right now from all of the new Star Trek boxes that I bought. Like most I kind of have a tendency to not like eating the same thing for breakfast over and over.

Speaking of Freakies I grew up with and ate that cereal as well. I still have some of my original Freakies cereal premiums that I kept as a kid. I also managed to pick up some more Freakie related stuff on Evil Bay a while back. I kind of would like to get one of those original cereal boxes. I am just not willing to shell out the $1,200 to get one yet. I would much rather put my money in Mego's still. Still I do find it tempting so I try not to look at them when I see them come up for auction. I "think" that people even reproduce cereal boxes to these days. I want to say that I seen some thing about this some where before. It has been so long though that I do not remember where it was. Anyway...Thanks again! Wheaties boxes are generally pretty cool as they have some pretty neat stars on them some times. I have a few Wheaties boxes in my so called cereal collection. I also have the whole collection of the little mini Wheaties boxes. Have you seen those? They seem to be pretty plentiful. I bought a bunch of them at a dollar store some time ago. Still neat to display though if this is your kind of thing.

I have some hanging on the wall and others stored flat....pretty much mine are more modern than vintage...primarily cartoon and/or movie tie-in cereals (as opposed to tie-ins with prizes or giveaways on a regular box)

Yeah, I really love and miss the good toys that one use to get when we were kids. Every now and then one can luck out and get a little something these days. Far and in between though. Not like the good old days that is for sure.

Anyone here remember the glow in the dark monster statues? Frankie, Werewolf, Dracula and The Mummy if I remember correctly. Those are neat...I "had" them when I was a kid. They seem to be worth a little bit these days. I wish I still had mine.

Pretty much the same here going on with my little collection. I like the movie and star type of boxes mainly. They are neat to display and look at. I am a sucker for the prizes like Star Trek badges and stuff like that still though.

Yeah the toys made breakfast fun for sure.Captain Crunch always came with best.Subs for the tub flying disks,glow in the dark skeletons.The Flinstons cereals had some good ones too.There a whole bunch I wish I had back.Even if they came in boxes today,those crappy high fiber cereal would come with just as crappy toys.Great thread you started even if it driffted from its original thought.

Thanks! I remember those Captain Crunch toys. I had some of those as a kid. like everything back then they seemed plentiful at the time. Now when I look back I wished that I would have kept it all. Then again I think that the most of us here are all in the same boat so to speak.

I wish I thought to save cereal boxes when I was a kid. I saved almost everything else! LOL
I have a bunch but most are newer. I have one or two from the Batman movie (with the bank!) I think the oldest one I have is a box of C-3PO's. (watch for a pic of it in one of my memory threads when I find it)
I think it's best to carefully open the top & bottom and then fold them flat. They can always be reassembled and reglued if need be. There is probably much less chance of them getting crushed/damaged if they are stored flat in a box that is big enough to lay them in flat.

Me to. That way I would not be looking at having to drop $1,200 on a vintage box of 70's Freakies cereal. Instead I could be selling boxes of Freakies cereal.

Thanks Rich for your opinion and tips on the storage of the cereal boxes. I believe that is exactly what I will start doing with mine.
