The Patty Duke Show coming to DVD

In the 1980's, I discovered Nick At Nite when they used to show shows from the 50's and 60's.

Many of the 50's and 60's shows were decidedly before my time and Nick At Nite was not only the first time I ever saw them, but the first time I ever even heard of them.

One of those shows was The Patty Duke Show. A show which took inspiration from The Parent Trap, where Patty Duke played 2 identical teenage girls.

I was hooked. Not only because I was a teenager who was crushing on the teenage Patty Duke but it was simply (at it's best) a breezy, fun, well written show.

Well, finally, after years of waiting and nursing old VHS tapes (in EP, no less) it's coming to DVD.

I used to like this show ... but when Patty came out in the late 70's and said she was constantly raped on that show by either the director or producer, it kind of taints it for me now.

Knowing Patty, she probably made the whole thing up because she has more then a few screws loose, but still in all, it kind of ruined it for me.

I haven't seen that show since the 70's but I used to watch it all the time. Doubt I'd buy it on DVD, though.
It has one of those theme songs you never get out of your head.
Does anyone actually know any identical cousins? LOL
BTW, William Schallert is still alive.

Things are more clear if you ever read her book. Her managers were a husband and wife team who were able to usurp a lot of the responsibility for Patty from her naive and unworldly mother. At one point the husband did abuse her but it wasn't an ongoing thing (and they were associated with her before the show).

During the second year of the show, Patty married one of the frequent directors, Harry Falk (she was 18, he was 31). That marriage lasted for 4 years. So she was involved with a director but it wasn't abuse.

Patty Duke's life was chaotic before she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and a lot of the stuff that made people think she was on drugs in the 1970's was actually due to that.

Now, she's an advocate for bipoloar treatment, has been married to the same guy for over 20 years (after a bunch of short marriages when she was still untreated) and seems to be generally happy.

Given all that, I can enjoy the show on it's own terms.

Some say it's a "hot dog", others say it's a "hot rod" either way it's pretty Freudian

Fantastic News! As you can guess from my screen-name, I collect (and actually prefer) most vintage 60's and 70's TV shows, so hearing up this definitely made me smile!!

I haven't seen The PD Show since the 1960's. I'm also hooked on 60's TV and have a HUGE DVD library. That was a good one. So was The Donna Reed Show. I remember when Shelley Fabares sang Johnny Angel on the show. It later became a hit.

Shelley was cute in The Donna Reed Show, but she was SMOKIN in Coach!

The first season of Donna Reed is out and the second season will be coming in July. The Lucy Show is also coming in July (an official release, not one of the public domain releases that are already out there).

Yeah I also love 50's-70's TV. I collect it on DVD like it's going out of style... because it is.

It's harder and harder to find these shows on the cable dial, even the channels that are supposed to be showing them are not.

So I make sure I have them on DVD.

^^^^Plus they are (hopefully) uncut and unedited so you get the WHOLE show like it was when it first aired (and reruns until they started chopping them up).
I bought the first season of I Love Lucy and it's stupendous! A lot of restored scenes (that were edited out for reruns) and extras.
I gotta pick up the rest of that series someday.
