    "What If" John Lennon

I wrote this fiction for a small section I am currently writing for in a local rock magazine. I got a lot of Lennon fans sending me kudos and I figured I would post it on this board since there seems to be a lot of Beatle fanatics besides myself.
Maybe some of you have different ideas of "What if" John Lennon hadn't of been murdered.
I am sorry that I am a John Lennon fanatic. Keep rude comments to yourself and carry on if this isn't your cup of tea.

Here is a rough copy and paste of the article. I hope it all fits in here...

John Lennon at age 68. May 27th, 2009

68 year old John Lennon finally had time to sit down with Rolling Stone last week to discuss his lifetime achievement award he received awhile ago. He recanted on his life and music and talked about all the hardships and triumphs that have kept him going for the last four decades including the failed attempt on his life by some crazy fan in 1980.

When asked about his ex wife Yoko Ono, Lennon claimed that they were some "wonderful years" but doesn't want to look back or hold grudges. The future is where his destiny lies and the past is the past.

John Lennon was glad that the Beatles were able to "Get Back" together in 1993 to put together the Beatles Anthology and release a whole new disc of new Beatles songs. The new songs put the Beatles back on the charts four a few years that lead up to a series of tours but as Lennon says, "all good things come to an end." when the Beatles, "Get Back" world tour came to an end in 1996.

John Lennon enjoyed reuniting with the fab four but in the end realized why they came to an end in the first place. He was grieve stricken in 2001 with the loss of his former Beatles band member George Harrison and has said, "there will never be any more appearances by the Beatles I am glad the Anthology brought us together for that last hurrah."

As most people know, John Lennon has recorded a series of albums since his come back in 1980 after a long hiatus to help raise his son Sean. With many titles like, "Double Fantasy," , "Running Through Time", "All For The Better" and his latest album in 2009's "Gamble" which is his first album to chart big since his 1996 release, "The Thing About Me".

Lennon has been sort of quiet since the death of George Harrison in 2001. His new girlfriend and actress 30 year old Marie Atkins has convinced Mr. Lennon to go into acting. Lennon has appeared in several films for fun and since began taking a serious interest in his art that has been appearing in many New York galleries.

Though almost killed in New York City in 1980, John Lennon has always felt that New York is his new home and he has stayed here since. He is a standing activist against gun violence and has made several appearances for shows that were against violence and guns.

John Lennon finally got the chance later in the year of 1982 to fly back home and finally sail down the coast of Liverpool like he had always wanted and dreamed. He visited a few family and friends and has returned home a handful of times through the years.

Now today with the newest release of his album, "Gamble". John Lennon is assembling a new band to hit the road for the first time in ten years. He stopped touring in 1999 after his last album "This Is Why" did not chart very well. The low sales of the record caused Mr. Lennon to not tour which lead to small amount of major long live appearances since.

"Thinking about a world tour," John Lennon said, "something me son Julian has been trying to get me to do. Calls me the old man. Sometimes I know he's right but I still think I got one or two in me. As long as these old bones are moving and playing. I think I can do it."

In this interview John also talks about his son's Sean and Julian. His relationship with Julian was estranged until the late 80s when the two came together after John Lennon split up with his wife Yoko Ono in 1989."

"It was one of those bonding moments that you never really know ya needed until it happened," John explains, "I love Julian just as much as I do Sean and sometimes ya take things in life for granted...ya know?"

John Lennon will be turning 69 in October. He says he don't feel old and is in good shape.
"I used to look at those old people when I was a young lad," John laughed, "Now I am one of those old people."

As the majority of you know, this story is not true. John Lennon was killed in 1980 by a crazy lunatic that cut his life short. I always often wonder what "could have been" if John Lennon was still alive. I have read hundreds of books of the life of John Lennon and a lot of them agree on some of the "what if" components I posted above.

I decided to put my artistic ability and create a "what if" picture of John Lennon in 2009 based on a lot of books and close people I have read and talked to. For instance a really good source was a book called "The Last Days of John Lennon" by Frederic Seaman where it talked about John Lennon getting a hair cut and he noticed he was starting to lose hair on his head a bit. That helped me as far as creating a hairline in the artists view below.

I looked at several pictures of John Lennon's father Freddie Lennon and even Julian Lennon to get an idea what an aging John Lennon could look like. In the end, I came up with the artist conclusion below. Lennon didn't like gray hair. So, I know he would have died it. As he matured, he shaved and wore contacts.
    Thus, you have my idea

That's an off art shot for "When I am 64" right? Saw that awhile ago. John Lennon, Paul McCartney and Ringo look like they were hitting the buffet cart a little too hard at the local Prime Quarter.

I have often had the same thoughts on this. Sadly we will never know. I took my kids to Strwberry Fields in NYC a few years ago and to his building and where he was shot. My son still talks about it even now and he was only 4 or 5 at the time.

A melancholy little piece, somehow. If only...

If he had lived i feel he would have put out good music thru the 80's and into the early 90s and perhaps there may have been a Beatles reunion in 2000 or before George passed away which ever came first, But i dout the music landscape would have changed but for those of us who like good music we would have had a lot more CDs worth of good music

Yes, I sometimes ponder what John would have done in the '80s. Despite the continued reunion pressure, I think he would have kept low-key.

As Paul wound down Wings at the close of the '70s because he just didn't feel like he had anything to prove anymore, a couple of over-hyped John-Paul projects would have probably arose, most likely keeping Paul AWAY from Michael Jackson (and Michael buying up the Beatle rights..).

Having only been a few months old when JFK was assassinated, the day John left us was the ONLY date I really felt 'time stood still'..

George's passing was not as shocking.., just a sadder reminder that we're all getting older.

Weird to say, since I turned 46 today.
