    Trekkies 2

I just watched this movie and though it was ok. Did anyone think it was kinda weird when the Brazilian fan thought he had something from 1967 or 68 that was super valuable when he showed his bridge set with about 6 figures? If he was such a fan how come he didn't really know what it was?
Also a few of the "conventions" looked like stretches to me. One looked like there were 25 people at it. The had an overhead projector and were showing pictures of contol panels. Also it made some fans look VERY fanatical. The woman who went to jury duty in her star fleet uniform? What an idiot. She tried to justify it by saying "If I were in the military it would not have been a problem". I just wanted to yell at her" Yo moron starfleet is NOT real!! You are not the commander of a turd let alone a starship!".
If this has been talked about before sorry, I just thought it was kinda interesting the way the fans were portrayed.

The first one is a lot of fun, the sequel is far too apologetic.

Sounds like a brilliant move to get out of Jury Duty!

So does wearing a Starfleet uniform mean that the person truly believes they are really in Starfleet? So those 400 pound guys in football team jerseys truly believe they are NFL players? How is one flavor of fandom less goofy than the other?

Well lets see here. An NFL fan doesn't role play each game and pretend they are certain players BUT some Trekkies do. Unless you are a little kid that behavior is not acceptable in the real world. If you are that into it megotu I did not mean to insult you or your crew/ship. Carry on commander.

Well, I think Coach's point was that they found the lunatic fringe and tried to portray that as being the norm. If you got that and your comment was in response to how the movie makers didn't get it, then we are on the same page and your post is sympathetic and I can see why you would equate it to NFL jerseys.

I'm a Star Trek fan and I don't own a Star Fleet uniform, probably never will, but even if I did, I wouldn't use it to get out of Jury Duty. Nor would 99.999999% of Star Trek fans who actually own a uniform.

The point was not that owning the uniform made anyone goofy, just that trying to say you were a member of Star Fleet to get out of Jury Duty is. And the outrage was that someone tried to paint that one person as being representative of being a Star Trek Fan.

Besides, getting out of Jury Duty is sooooooo easy, that resorting to those means........well, no other way to say it, but what a Dumb ****.

Gawd, it never occurred to me that I could put on my John Elway jersey and go on down to Subway to get a free sandwich. I suppose if the road jersey doesn't work, I could throw on a home one. If the classic home Orange doesn't work, I could switch to the 1997 Blue.

Are you saying that the people who play Fantasy Football are not roleplaying NFL games? I don't own a Trek uniform or a football jersey. Just saying that there are some pretty easy to see similarities between the two fandoms and one is considered normal and the other is seen as a sign of mental instability.

I have a close friend who is a packers fan, when he's not enjoying beer or shooting things. Recently he tagged along with me to a comic show and I was curious what he'd think of the people in costume and all that.

When we got in the car he said "I don't see much difference in that than i do a Packers tailgate except I think the comic show had less people in costume."

The Average NFL fan doesn't but I bet you some do, I haven't acted out Star Trek since I was 9 either. I've also seen fist fights over team rivalries, which is the very definition of fail.

I've been to a couple of sports card conventions (you never know where you might find toys) and I find there isn't much difference in a large group of a people exchanging trivia while wearing the uniforms of larger than life people. I think we have to get over some fandom being cooler than others, sports geek, trek geek, KISS geek, it still has "geek" on it.

Brian I agree with your "fringe" assessment. Those in either sports, collecting, or any other field who let something entertainmentwise consume their life can be found everywhere. I just think it's probably more accepted in society if it's sports orientated. I have seen weird people who decorate their house in some team color or only have their team's stuff in their house (antiquetiger) and obsess in that way and people accept it more than the person who wants to turn their house into the enterprise.

When I first saw that Liz Lemon dodging jury duty scene on 30 Rock, I immediately thought of the Commander in her Trek uniform.

I loaned my copy of Trekkies to someone years ago and never got it back. :( I haven't seen Trekkies 2 yet... don't know if it's worth it.

It's nowhere near as fun, they tend to gravitate towards the less eccentric fan and visit other countries. They do drop in on Gabriel and a few of the past interviewees but it's not the same.

                              I agree.

I see no difference between Sci-fi fans quoting trivia or lines from shows and Sports fans quoting football stats from games, teams and players from the past 50 years. Wearing a football jersey from your favorite team and player is considered normal. But wearing a Trek shirt isn't. I don't see the difference. Does the football fan think they are actually in the NFL or the player on their jersey?

Having a phaser or communicator prop makes someone weird. But having a replica football or helmet doesn't. A large half naked man painted in team colors and wearing a cheese hat at a game is considered perfectly normal. A person wearing a superhero or Trek uniform at a convention is weird.

Seems like the same things to me. So many double standards, so little time.

You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...
