      Yes, sad but true
They don't care about it being a gift, all they see is the $500 value

Between Canada and the US there are no "custom duties" per se, but we have to pay the sales tax if the parcel is opened and inspected. That's 6¢ on the Dollar with a $5 surcharge.

Sure beats the cost of driving down to pick it up!

In addition to taxes, there can be duties (depends on the commodity) on importations between Canada and the US if the commodity is not of North American origin. Some items, like certain kinds of clothing and textiles, can have quite high rates of duty. NAFTA really only applies to items that are actually manufactured in Canada, US or Mexico.

A guy in the UK bought a Thunderbirds item from me a while ago on ebay.
              He paid about $125.00
He wanted me to declare it as a gift and value it at $1.00
              I told him nope

Same thing happened with a few other international buyers of mine.

I'm going to insure it for $125.00 and declare it's worth $1.00 ?
              I don't think so
I always state custom's fees are buyer responsibility and that I won't falisfy a custom's form (as a legal govt document it's mail fraud)
