Is It Safe To Drink From An Old Thermos?

I have an extra Superfriends thermos from the 70's lunchbox. I'm thinking about bringing it to work to keep water in. Will I die?

I would think if you washed it real well and it didn't have any rust or anything around it you'd be fine.

I would probably store it with your private collection or just bring it to work for presentation purposes. If you can't verify it's clean for yourself, then no opinion on this board will help you if you take a drink of bacteria that puts you in the hospital. Just food for thought...

Better fill it fulla whiskey, just to be on the safe side.

Is it the kind with the glass liner or one of those plastic ones?
The glass ones last forever since glass is inert. Just clean it out. If it's a plastic one and it has an odor I would let it sit with some bleach & water overnight and that should take care of any problems.

It should be plastic. I think they phased out the glass lined thermoses around 1972 or 1973 and Superfriends was 1976.

It should be safe I would think. I would just clean it thoroughly with antibacterial soap and never run it through the dishwasher since it would probably ruin the lithograph.

That's a really good question, Bill

If plastic action figure parts can deteriorate in 30+ years why would plastic thermos liners be any different ?

                  I wouldn't do it -- just incase

I seem to recall something about a recall on the plastic liners way back in the eighties. The silver paint chips off...or had lead in it...or both?
Not sure if it was for Thermos brand stuff, somebody else, or all of them?

                    Anybody else remember this?

If you were going to use it I'd wash it out with a bleech and water solution then rinse it out good afterwards.

It can't be any worse than eating the old chewing gum from trading cards from the 70's and 80's.Keep us posted on any ill health you come into.

I sure as hell wouldn't be drinking out an over 30 year old Thermos. Sounds really nasty.

You won't die. You may find it makes the water taste like moldy old Mego plastic!
