    Baseball Card Collecting

Does anyone else collect Baseball cards?

Thought I would share this. In 2001 it was the 50th Anniversary of Topps baseball and the year I got back into Baseball cards. I have been working on one set since then, 2001 Topps Reserve. Well this week I will be getting the last auto card I need to complete the set. This one was a 150 card set with 49 short print rookies, 47 signed baseballs, and PSA graded Auto Cards and now after almost 8 years I am finally done. This was a challenging set to build and I feel great about. Just wanted to share my happiness.

In the early to mid nineties I was all over Baseball cards. I'd still had some from when I was younger, but it really took off for me around 1993 or so. I mostly only collected rookie cards. That was about all I had an interest in and still to this day, that's about it. At one time I had Kirby Pucket, Steve Garvey(my favorite all-time player), Yastremski, Robin Yount, Tony Gwynne, Griff JR and a few others that aren't coming to me.

I think I eventually sold these off to pay some bills or maybe but a guitar. Can't remember exactly, but I have fond baseball card memories and still love the game.

I never collected, but I used to have a few I picket up years ago.

I think the only one I have left today is an ungraded Nolan Ryan Topps 1975 #500

Is that one worth anything ?

I sold my minty Nolan Ryan rookie card in L.A. many years ago. I got $150.00 for it. That was pre-ebay. Now is see them going for $800-$1200. Kinda sucks but whatta ya gonna do?

I still have all of the cards that meant something to me. George Brett, Nolan Ryan, Ozzy Smith, Tony Gwynn, Paul Molitor to name a few....all the way up to Chipper Jones. Something about the strike season of 1994 just made me not care anymore. No World Series sucks.

In 1996, I made a present of my 1986 Topps Traded set to a kid who kind of needed a pick up. Given how history has played out for the players that made that a "money set", I expect him to show up on my doorstep, punch me in the mouth, and say, "Thanks for nothing!".

I still enjoy looking at the cards from when I was a kid. I remember watching those guys from the mid seventies and now when I crack open one of my books I have great flashbacks. I still have every set since 1976, I was nine then. I have also been buying a complete set for my boy every year since he was born. Both my kids love going to the games and I hope someday they will be able to crack open the card album and remember some good times they had with Dad.

                  That's awesome, John.

Despite my crappy attitude (forgive me, I loved the game soooo much and the Strike, Pete Rose, McGuire........etc. just hit me hard), it is still such a Father/Son thing and my Dad's love for the game and his stories still resonate with me. I'll never forget his thrill when I got to play catch with Mickey Mantle. I just think it's cool that you collect for your boy and want to share Baseball with him. There's hope for the game, yet!

I used to really get into collecting BB cards and non sports cards. I started seriously collecting in 1982 and have every Topps complete set up to 2003. Along with some Donruss, Fleer and Stadium Club sets. I have lots of older cards to. Mainly stars that I have kept in page protectors in binders. Most of all my older cards are now all more or less burried in totes somewhere within my collection of other stuff that I have collected. I have recently bought some single packs and boxes of 2008 and 2009 cards. I was thinking about getting back into them again. I am still not sure. The strike really took a toll on me and how I felt about BB and the players at that time. I see that BB cards and card collecting has since picked back up rather well. Things were pretty dead there for a good while due to the strike. Back in the day I used to pay like .25 to .30 a pack and now I see the card packs are like $1.99 for less cards. I am still not as big into collecting cards as I once was. Mego's is really my top priority as I would rather spend my money on them. I wish I could finally quit Hot Wheels to but they are too darn addicting and they just keep making cooler cars all the time. Darn Mattel!!

That's a great accomplishment and you should be proud of yourself!!! My wife collects Baseball cards but her hobby is too rich for my blood. Let's put it like this......3 years ago I bought her a p.s.a. yaz rookie card , it came back as a 6....that was a stocking stuffer !!! I cant compete. if I blew $500 on a Mego she would spend $1200 on a card !!! Scary stuff!!!

Congrats. I collected baseball cards with my Dad starting around '91 when my oldest son was born. I think I stopped around 2000 or 2001 or so. It was mainly topps with some fleer and others. Now he's looking to sell out.

Wow, I can't believe some of the prices you guys are quoting on baseball cards. I think its kind of cool if your partner collects something. You can share in the fun when they get a grail. Wish my partner collected.
