Many people have heard of the first Role Playing game, Dungeons and Dragons created in the early 70's by Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson. I'm just now picking up on the old TSR edition. So, AD&D, AD&D 2E etc. People say that in the 80's that was the best time for D&D, unfortunatley I never got to live those days. Did anybody play back when it was popular?

I was big into AD&D! I played it religiously from 81-89. We had a club in school but the school board put an end to it cause it promoted devil worship
That Mazes and Monsters book and Tom Hank's TV about movie didn't help the cause either! I DM'd a game about 3 years ago for some neighbor kids who had just discovered it. It was pretty cool -
My buddies and I tried many times to play RPGs. I remember D&D, Star Frontiers, Gang Busters, and Boot Hill(?). Tunnels and Trolls worked in there, somehow. We'd get into it for a little bit and then quickly adjourn to play Atari or go out on the front yard to wrestle, box, or play laser tag. I remember one or two Dudes always being ****ed off because they were all set to play.
The only real games we ever got into were Axis and Allies and Risk. Those games would go all night.Last edited by saildog; Apr 28, '09, 8:15 PM.Comment

Man, I wished I could find people to play religiously with me. I'm 14 now...And can't really find anybody. Well, I found people who want to play...But not like the glory days of AD&D... :( Oh well.Comment

I know it's more fun to have others sitting there eating Cheetos and drinking Dr. Pepper, but I bet with this new-fangled Internet, you could probably find a way to play real-time. Come to think of it, the Internet would have saved some of my buddies getting hacked because the rest of us were ADD (which was not a diagnosed condition in the old days, but I swear to Pete, almost all of us had it).Last edited by saildog; Apr 28, '09, 8:26 PM.Comment

Oh yeah I used to play back in the day.Ad&D and star frontiers.Loved them both but prefered star fronts. Also played axis and allies and risk.
Great times for sure. The school library would let us use confrence rooms at lunch to play it.When you say Its hard, it actually means Im not strong enough to fight for it. Stop saying its hard. Think positive!Comment

I begun my geekness at the early age of ten when I began playing in 1979. It was the first edition Gygax stuff and was awesome. I wish I still had all those books and players guides. I also remember playing another Gygax game called traveller. Some kind of sci-fi stuff that I don't remember clearly.
I need to find some seriously old back issues of Dragon magazine to relive my childhood spent slaying orcs and not kissing girls.
ScottI almost had a psychic girlfriend but she dumped me before we met.
If anyone here believes in psychokinesis, please raise my hand.Comment

I was addicted to AD&D when I was in elementary school. I thought it was so cool. There was only a few of us that played, but we had a blast

I think I started playing around 1979 when I was 13. Me, my brother and a bunch of friends played through most of the 80s. I still have my books, dice, modules and character sheets. Those were good times.Comment

I used to love playing this game back in the days when we were kids. Before computers and real video games. This role playing game was fun and took up a lot of our time until we just out grew it.
Always being a Captain America fan, I used to love playing the goody, goody paladin guy. People used to love my character (Sir David) because not a lot of people could play a lawful good paladin like me.
Oh those days...I miss themMore custom Mego madness on Facebook right here...

I always wanted to play but I've never had any friends. That's why I like it here so much. At least here I can pretend to have friends.

Online
Have you played World of Warcraft? There is another Playstation Game that is Much like (A)DnD but I have not played Dungeons and Dragons online.
WoW can be fun but there is no substitute for a group of your friends playing it live.
But it can suck your life away. It is hard to play a game in under 2hrs. I think I averaged 4hrs per session during my years. One summer my cousin and I played for 2 weeks only stopping to eat and bathe. That was the bomb.
It is addictive. It takes time for the DM to prep a good game, but once you get a campaign going, it can become automated.
As a precaution, if you start playing. Take at least 5mins per hour to do some pushups, jumping jacks or something similar because the game is so sedentary.
What city do you live in, more or less? Have you checked local hobby stores that sell the game (and usually comic books) to see if anyone is advertising for players to start or expand their game?
It can be fun. I loved it. I had to quit though to go to college. A friend of mine was in a game every Thursday night for about 9years. They had to break up when the DM moved out of state. He writes books and movies now. He has finished about 7 of each but not yet sold one.
Good luck.-
