So;
For thoe who don't know, Sam Dunn did an excellent doccumentary on heavy metal music called "Metal: A Headbanger's Journey." A most excellent film that I can't recommend enough, even if you hate the music. It'll explain why people like it. Even the old biddies at work enjoyed it. (If you can, snag a copy o the special edition. The second disk has a mini-doccumentary on Norwegian metal, and an extended version of the Mayhem interview. It's worth it just for the interview.)
He's done a sequel; "Global Metal," that looks at the genre from around the world. It's another awesome film, and it hilights a lot of stuff I had no idea about. Like the metal scene from India. And China. (There's a scene with a Chinese metal band on stage, who use a lot of Chinese folk music in their show. The singer is singing a classic Chinese style song, backed up by classic instruments. It leads in to this piercing scream as the electric kicks in and the hair on your neck stands on end. Amazing stuff!)
One of the freakiest parts is footage from a Metallica concert in Indonesia. At one point there was a huge number of people trying to get in, a riot broke out and they torched the neighborhood. (There's more to it than just that; but you'll have to see the film.) So you've got Metallica playing, and just over this huge security wall you can see what looks like the whole world coming to an end!
There's a big section on metal in the Middle East that's really interesting too. (The SLAYER grafitti story made me laugh.) And at the end Dunn attends the first western metal concert ever in India. Iron Maiden. (The look on Bruce Dickenson's face when the audience starts singing the opening of "Fear of the Dark" is priceless!)
All told, if you've seen the first one you MUST see this one. And if you haven't seen the first one you MUST see them both. (Even if you aren't a metalhead.)
