The "Great Movie on too Late" Dilemna

This week, my wife and I were preparing to go to bed and she flipped the channel to "John Carpenter's The Thing" and it had just started. It was 11 but both of can't resist a small circle of movies when they air on TV, stuff like GoodFellas, The Thing, Star Ship Troopers etc and they always seem to start at 11.

So I ended up with a nice six hour sleep because we had to see "The Blair Monster". Did I mention that I don't own any of these movies on DVD? Even if I did, I'd never watch them except when they're on "the telly".

Does anyone else go through this.

Oh, Yea, all the time. My Super Ex-Girlfriend and The Day After Tomorrow have been on FX lately and I seem to stay up and watch them even though I've seen them a dozen times.

Absolutely go through the same thing with certain movies.

I think it has something to do with a part of me wanting to watch a movie just like I did in the old days before VCRs and DVD players. If a movie has a certain "feel" to it (for me it's Twister, Mars Attacks!, Independence Day, The Day After Tomorrow, Starship Troopers, to name a few) I will put up with watching it in the time slot scheduled, commercials, and edits for content because it reminds me of how I watched most movies as a kid.

                Same here,
I could watch Shawshank 100 billions times on TV, but I don't own it and wouldn't want too.

At this point I own most of my favourite movies that I love watching over and over again (and the three movies you mention are definitely on my list, especially THE THING), and once in a while I find one of them playing on TV and watch a bit before I think "What am I doing, I can watch this movie anytime and in much better video/audio quality" and then try to force myself to change the channel (or turn off the TV). Sometimes it's tough though for some strange reason. Some movies are just so addictive to watch

Happens all the time. I have a bunch of DVDs that are still in the shrink wrap but if the same movie comes on TV late at night I'll push myself to watch it. Opening that shrink wrap it far too much trouble it seems. Happened just the other night when Dances With Wolves was on and that is one long movie!

I am just the opposite. I have a vast collection of VHS/DVD's. I cannot stand watching a movie on TV as the commercials are just way too many for me to bare. It is a great feeling for me to be able to watch a movie commercial free any time one wishes. For an example a one hour movie is really only like 30 minutes when you get rid of all of the commercials. What a time saver. Now with all the time I saved I can post more here at the MM. Whoo Hoo!!!

ohhh man DVR and Tivo are a godsend. I love being able to record stuff now and never worry about missing it. And being able to fast forward through the commercials is even better. 80% of my dvr space is takenup by horror movies or shows that came on around halloween. The other 20% is ghost hunters or superhero movies lol

DVR is great for those type of movies...Turner Classic Movies tends to run odd stuff in the middle of the night, so I'll search their listings and just set the recorder. Then I just forget about it (like I would anyway, but in this case the DVR remembers for me).

It's also great for watching regular tv shows...I usually wait until about 15 minutes after it's started, then I can fast forward through the commercials. Recording stuff like SNL is excellent. If the musical guest is not to my taste (and as an old fart, most of them are), you can skip through. I find I can watch a new show in about 35 minutes after all the commercials and music are out.

The only downside is I tend to let episodes pile up. I think there are like 7-8 episodes of House on my DVR to watch right now.
