The few times I've seen these sets sell they always go cheap; so if your son wants it I wouldn't keep it from him because of its value.

I know what you're talking about, it seems to be linked to the Mego LionRock WW2 figures by name and logo but I'm not sure if it is indeed a Mego Product. Bill can probably answer this better than me.

I have some boxed WWII Mego/Lion Rock figures, and the logo and style do seem similar....

The "R" in the circle is a regsistered trade mark Mego might sublet the licence to another company like they did with eagle force

I had a similar set when I was a kid, except in black plastic. Same loco, tender and tracks, but with a caboose and maybe another passenger car. I can't help you with the value or origin of your set, but I seem to recall that the locomotive actually produced smoke too!
