    Anyone here a Mac expert?

I have had a G3 since they came out and 2 weeks ago the modem just quit. That's why I have not been on line every night.

Most Mac repair places say this computer and it's components are "vintage" and parts cannot be bought to replace it. I did win a replacement modem on eBay but if that doesn't work I may just upgrade the whole thing to OS 10.3.4add a new ZIF Sonnet processor and get a USB modem.

Still the nagging question in my mind is why did it just up and quit? No other part of the computer is failing. The whole thing runs well.

The limit of my expertise is that I just buy a new Mac every three or four years because I drank the Kool-Aid long ago. So kudos to you for sticking with a G3 for so long. That truly is vintage...Sorry I can't answer the why....

G3 modems are highly susceptible to power surges. After replacing two on my G3, I lost my third and couldn't get a cheap replacement from my usual hardware sources, so I upgraded to a G5.

Hmmmmm. That would explain it. The day it stopped working we had a thunder and lightning storm-very bad. I even turnoff the power on the surge protector when I leave the house. Hopefully the replacement I won on eBay will work.

I have a G3, has never stopped working, great little computer, I did upgrade the system up to Mac Os X 10.4.10, I highly recommend you go to 10.4, that's the starting point for most new stuff.

You upgraded the software but did that slow the computer down? Did you also upgrade the processor? I have wanted to use a Sonnett ZIF upgrade for a long time but it seems every new version of OS has even more bells and whistles and slow everything down too.

Hi I'm a PC. Apples are for fruit salad. Sorry my dad owns a newspaper and swears by apple stuff. We used to argue about it all the time. I must admit it is much better for media applications but I've always been a PC guy. Hope your issues clear up soon.

I got the part in the mail and I'm back in business! It works great!

For some reason bringing up Mac's seems to always start the Mac vs. PC argument,( note to Brian: General Buzz General conversation. No religion, politics or Mac vs. PC!)! I learned computers in college in the early 90's and since I was an art major they had us work on Mac's. I used to see the PC people stuggle all the time with akward computer languages. To be honest tho the PC users were not drawing with their computers. They were doing term papers and stuff.

Just buy whatever computer you want. They're apples and oranges,(pun intended).
