    Transmission down for the count

Man talk about bad timing.I was driving along with my wife today just enjoying the day and clunk. No more drive,no more second,no more low gear.
Just park, reverse and 4 gears of neutral.

Of Course we were not just a block or two away from home we were all the way across town.$60 for the tow home and now I have a 96 caravan with a dead tranny.
Guess I shouldn't complain it has been a good van we have well over 300,000km on it.
Still I can not just go out and get a new one right at the moment. So now I'm stuck with get it rebuilt $1500 or just swap it out with another used one $100 and my time?
Or grab a cheapy car for now?

What really annoys me is there was no warning or anything. It has been running great.

    Sometimes I hate vehicles!!!

Damn that really sucks. I hope you can get it back on the road soon. I was stranded last year and I had to walk home, it was pretty lame. I feel for you.

Thanks guys,And yeah I know how to do it.Just a matter of do I want to?
I mean it is a 96.Plus I have to go to the wrecker take one out there which is way across town. That means borrowing someones wheels.Take out the other one, bring it home take out mine, swap them and hope that one lasts for awhile. They have a ninety day warranty but that's a pain in the butt to swap it out again in a month or so...

At least it is a light one.I could get a used one installed for $600.
But I don't want to pay for something I can do if I wasn't so damn busy!!!

300,000km...in Winnipeg....Thats something in and of itself. The tranny used in that era minivan actually requires yearly fluid changes to prevent sludge buildup in the ports...I've never ripped one open (yet) but the "computer" ports inside the tranny plug up, and then the tranny does exactly what your mentioning.
I'm not sure, but it may be possible to do a flush and refill with the correct fluid type (again these years of front drive trannies were pretty fickle fluid wise) and the problem may rectify itself?
May be worth a try...Easier than rippin out the tranny. Never did it in a minivan, but I did in my old Turismo 2.2 way back when...the curses are still echoing off the walls of my garage! (tight spaces--big hands!)

(by the way...Hope your keeping dry!?....I imagine all those fancy ditches are working in the city, but I hear outside town things are pretty rough?)

I had a similar thing go down on a Volvo last year. 'cept we had zero time and zero car options. Ended up having the burnt one rebuilt. Waaaay more than was estimated. If you are short on time and $$ I suggest the shop does the swap. If you are mainly short on the do re mi, and can do the work yourself, get greasy. I sure wish I did. I hate to pay for a car twice.

You know what,I am going to try that first.I usually do a flush and fill with filter replacement on this van every year.I think the kit is about $25 if I remember correctly.Great idea,Maybe it will just do the trick. It can't hurt I haven't done one this year yet. 25 minutes versus a couple of days is just fine by me.
I know the feeling about the curses, last tranny I changed was in my 78 mustang and it was a pain in the rump.I swore I would never do another one again.

I have been very good to this tranny as I heard these models were pretty bad.I know guys that had to replace them every 100,000km like clockwork. So like I said I'm pretty lucky.

As far as the water goes....Yeah it's getting wet around here alright.I've been bailing water out of the basement for the last three days and I'm in the city.
My work is flooded out badly. It's right next to the river so makes it hard to do perimeter patrols when half the zoo is flooded. They are saying now the flood is in proportion to the 78 flood. At first they thought it would only be as bad as the 97 flood which was real bad.But 78 was devastating.I know Harper was in the area to look at the flooding today.

Maybe I better scrap the van and get a nice boat instead???
