I turned on the local sports talk and the way they were talking I knew he was gone even before they repeated the news. The whole region is stunned. He was the voice of the Phillies for my entire life. It feels worse than when Gene Hart died
Very sad. It happened here in Washington as he was getting ready to broadcast the Nationals opening day. They were able to have a moment of silence for him.
I am so upset about this news. I went to the Phillies game last wednesday & it was such a special day for Phils fans because the team finally got their world series rings after a long 28 years. Harry Kalas, more than anyone else, knew just how much the city starved for those rings year after year. Kalas probably appreciated the ring ceremony more than any other Phillies fan. He was their biggest fan. So, I am soooo happy he was a part of the ceremony last week and that he even threw out the first pitch of the game. It was almost as if he waited for that very moment to arrive before passing away.
Looking back, I am so happy he was able to call the last out of the world series this past year. It must have been such a thrill for him. When the Phils won the world series in 1980, Kalas was there at the Vet, but he wasn't able to announce the winning out because of strict MLB rules at the time regarding local broadcasters. I am so glad he lived to see his dream come true.
When I look back and remember Kalas, the moment that sticks out the most occurred about half an hour or so after the last out of the last game of the 2007 season. That was the game where the Phils won the NL East Division with a historic September run. The Phils needed to win that last game and the Mets needed to lose. Both happened. After most of the fans left Citizens Bank Park, Kalas picked up the mike and started singing "High Hopes." I knew at the time that I was listening to something special. I called up someone I knew and held my phone in the air so he could listen to. It was an amazing experience. Kalas had such a distinct voice and such a passion for the game. He will be missed and will be forever in our hearts.
I am going to this Saturdays game & before the game I think they are having a memorial for the fans. It will be very upsetting, but at the same time, this shows just how much the city of Philadelphia loved him and respected him as both an announcer and a human being. It'll be really weird watching Phils games for now on without hearing him say "That ball is outta here!" when someone hits a home run. We'll miss you Harry.
Kalas had an amazing voice. I loved his work with NFL films that's how i grew up knowing him.and heard him call football games. He voiced the very first talking sports game Joe Montana's sports Talk football which i still own.
