Actually, I'm like many people in that I admire guys like James Belushi, Bruce Willis, John Goodman, and Dennis Quaid who are multi-talented and like to get out and play music. Good for them!

But when a dilettante truculently puts himself on the same level as Tom Petty I'll call it for what it is -- el toro poo-poo. That would be like Elvis Presley equating his acting ability to Sir Lawrence Olivier's on the strength of movies like Blue Hawaii. Billy Bob and the Boxmasters aren't even in the same league as Goodman or Quaid's bands, let alone a Musical Icon like Tom Petty.

When I started reading this thread I thought it would be about Madonna trying to adopt another child from Africa... but I see it's about Billy-Bob Thornton... and I thought we had agreed not to talk about BB's weird behavior and that kind of s**t... by the way, I used to subscribe to Starlog magazine. They had this editor named Howard Zimmerman, who I met in New York in 1983, but I guess a lot of people met Howard in the 80s. Anyhow, would you bring up BB Thorn-in-the-Side in a Mego forum if Tom Petty were reading it? I didn't think so... Hmmm... I have no idea... I just know that Madonna adopts African kids and so does Angelina Jolie, but I'm not going to bring her up b/c she used to be married to BB and we're not here to discuss BB... so let's get back on/off topic...

All he was doing was asking if Gomeshi would ask the same question to
a guy that's known to be solely a musician...Thorton could have used
ANYone as an example in this case---heck, he may have even hit upon
someone you think ISN'T worthy of "iconic value"

Yes, usually when someone makes a comparative statement like that it's a fair assertion that they are comparing themselves to someone or something.

Okay, you seem to feel you have an insight into what Thornton meant -- or was doing -- in that interview, but I don't quite understand what you are trying to get at by talking about who I may consider as not being Iconic. Now you're getting all hypothetical on me...

The question was asked in context of musical roots and what kind of music Thornton listened to as a child, and whether he had a passion for music as a boy. Just after Thornton's rather extensive allusion to building models/hobbies. (Methinks the man d'ost protest too much!) And yes, as a host of a radio show that deals with current bands Ghomeshi would ask any musician that question. Even the likes of Tom Petty.

So why should Thornton get all defensive? Probably because he realizes the truth: he shouldn't give up his day job as an actor.

I think he really needs to get over himself.He is an actor trying to be a musician and that could work if he has the chops for it but come on denouncing who he is,is just stupid.

Yeah...he was a bit heavier back then...but after Kurt Russell biatch-slapped him...I guess that's when he started losing weight in order to try and become a leading man.
