I can't tell you how much stuff I got for free because Walmarts scanners are so bad.

Kroger, in Ohio does the same thing. I'm sure lots of grocery chains carry the policy. With Kroger, it is usually a sale item that doesn't ring up as a sale. I always catch this stuff after I'm home and my wife goes you paid THAT for this and I say, No, if it wasn't on sale I would not have bought it. I hate that.

      I didn't even know WM has self-serve ck-outs?
Never noticed them. Of course I detest WM anyway so I only go there a few times a year.
There are some grocery stores here that after a certain time at night they have NO cashiers at all and you HAVE to use the self-checkout! There is a new chain here also, called Fresh & Easy. They are small store about the size of a Walgreens and they have no cashiers at all. All self-checkout, but they do have one person who will run between registers and bag your stuff if you use the checkout with a motorized belt that moves your items to back of the register. I see no savings in cost of the products. I only go there if they have a good deal in their weekly flyers.

Oh believe me. It was late. I think close to midnight. And I live in a place where they roll up the streets at night. LOL
But it never fails. There can be nobody in sight. Not a car as far as you can see. I pull in and go up to the kiosk and sure enough....3 (impatient) people walk in right away.
Or there is one person there and they have a mountain of crap to take care of and act like they've never seen a computer screen before and by the time they are done (I could've been in and out in 3 minutes) there are like 5 people behind me.

My wife is the store manager for the Salem N.H. Walmart Supercenter and she told me that about 60% of their Shrink (theft) occurs at the self check-out aisles

They had them here, then took them out and replaced them with lanes that are never open. When is the technology coming that allows you to just push the cart thru a scanner and total up the bill. WM doesn't seem to want to have more than two cashiers on at any time anyway.

Some GIANT supermarket stores in our area have scanners in the cart handle that allow you to scan items as you put them into your cart, then pay the total at checkout. I haven't tried this yet, I'm of the "cashiers are here to ring me up school". I try to avoid self checkout unless I only have one or two things. Usually at Wal Mart the cashier has to come over anyway because the machines never register right.

Has anyone ever noticed what I call the "Holographic Cashier" phenomon? That's when you walk into WallyWorld past the register banks and there are cashiers at the entrance to the checkouts, waving customers into thier lines.
You go and shop, get your stuff, and when you go to checkout, there is only one line open and 75 people ahead of you in it. All those other cashiers are gone now. I don't believe they exist, I think they are holograms designed to fool you into believing you can get in and out of the store quickly. I believe that WalMart has partnered with Disney for this technology.

I never have very good luck with those self checking things. I understand the concept, but between the scanner not registering or the bagging area not sensing the item weight or my items just being too big to use the bagging area, I always screw something up.

I remember when they finally put the self checking section into the supermarket I shopped in back in Baltimore, I was so happy. The cashiers were less than, well, I 'm not sure if they were even breathing at times. But the only thing slower than those cashiers were the people who chose to use the self checkout.

I'll use them if no one else is there and I have a few items. Otherwise, I avoid them like the plague. They never seem to go smoothly when you're behind someone else.

I use it because old people hate it and I don't have to wait behind old people or ignorant people either. It takes close to average intelligence to use the thing also so that rules out a lot of people who are usually in front of you or I when we are trying to get in and out.

                              I just love the self-checkout.

Last year I did a little comic book story about the self-checkout.

                              Check it out.

Must be the same people who are in front of you at the drive-thru ATM? The ones who take so long you figure they must have never seen an ATM before?
Or the ones in front of you at McDonalds who act like they've never been there before either? The menu hasn't really changed, people! LOL. When I take my kids I always find out what they want while we're in the car. Then when we get to the counter I rattle off their orders.
