I just entered an office pick 'em pool and literally made my picks based on statistical probabilities and going a little bit against the norm to try to differentiate my picks from what a typical person would do.

UNC is has the highest probability of winning but I decided not to go with them as I suspect most people will choose them.

Personally, I'm supporting my alma mater The University of Maryland Terrapins who just squeaked in. My heart is with them but with money on the line, I didn't even pick them to beat California Berkely in the first round.

My personal picks are for Duke and Memphis to meet in the Championship game with Memphis taking it all.

My Canes didn't make it,they are playing in the NIT or something.I've always been a Duke basketball fan,but I don't think they'll take it this year.

Our official office pool was just released.

Looks like most people picked Louisville to win it followed by UConn, N. Carolina, and Pitt.

Quite a few people picked Memphis along with me and one person almost has my exact picks down to Memphis and Duke in the championship but picked Duke.

A few Oklahomas, a Mich. St. and a Syracuse but that was about as far out as it got for champion picks.

Day one in the office pool and I'm sitting in 49th place out of 72 entrants...not good.

Fortunately, my teams that lost I didn't have going past the 2nd round so I'm still in it...as long as Memphis and Duke hang around. Only one other person besides me picked Memphis and Duke...they picked Duke to win, I picked Memphis.

I know neither one of them are favorites but I decided if I had any chance of winning I had to look to teams with a chance but not your typical picks which were all #1 seeds. If all 4 #1 teams get bumped, my chances increase dramatically since about 95% of everyone in the pool picked a #1 seed to win it all.

I don't overanalyze it or spend a lot of time on it as others do.

I simply looked at a sheet from Sagarin's ratings that looked at various odds of various teams and the spreads when matched up against one another. When there was a fairly large spread; I took the favored team. When the spread was fairly close, I usually took a gamble and picked the underdog thinking the only way to win an office pool is to pick some upsets but play the odds as close as possible.

I also stayed away from all #1 seeds in each bracket to win it all since I knew they would be the ones chosen most frequently.

This is the first year I have attempted to do this using probabilities for my picks and thinking a little counter intuitive to how most people pick. It will be interesting to see how it turns out.

There are two guys in our pool that follow college basketball closely. They must spend hours and hours making their picks but darn if they aren't sitting in first place again right now.

We only threw in $10 a piece so I did it more of an experiment than anything to see if my probability analysis would beat someone who spends hours and hours pouring over stats and matchups.
