    I find it fascinating....

In the world of cell phones, PCs, and video games, that most kids find it hard to operate...

    WALKIE-TALKIES!

No lie...the "push to talk, let go to listen" concept escapes a lot of them. Two of my boys donated some Walkie-talkies to my class, so I keep them in my desk and pull them out when we take them to the park. We were playing "Cops & Robbers" and gave the talkies to the "cops" so they could communicate w/ each other during the chase. Most of them didn't push the button and just screamed at each other. The ones that did push the button, never remembered to let go to listen.

Did you have these when you were little? Do any of your kids have them now? Can they work them? Am I just crazy thinking that kids who know how to push endless buttons for PCs, cell phones and video games can work the old school walkie-talkies?

I used to have a few sets of Walkie Talkies when I was younger --- maybe 9-10 years old.

I think younger then that a child would have to practice the hand / talk coordination to get them good enough where they can play a game with them.

They're probably too young to figure out the rhythm of having a conversation on them without practice.

        Really? Weird!

I'll have to try that with my nieces.

Something like that happened on the weekend while watching my nieces play with a wii. It's a little hard to explain, they were playing a game where there are mini games inside the overall game (if that makes sense). They were fine playing the main part of the game, but to play the mini games you had to use the controller like an old Nintendo controller and just move around with the buttons. They got way too confused.

I still have a set of the Radio Shack Archer Space Patrol ones I used as a kid. If you clipped the wire from a big house CB antenna to the antennae of a walkie talkie you could be picked up on channel 14 on a cb radio. We lived near a highway so we could pick up truck drivers when the whole cb thing was huge, but only for a short time before they would be out of range. Kinda cool but It was a sentence or two and they were gone. Nowadays I see cb radios in second hand stores for less than I paid for my walkie talkies. Would have made the whole ordeal a lot easier. Maybe get a whole paragraph out before ya lose em.

You think that’s bad I have a rotary pay phone in my house. There was a 23 year old over who had no idea how to dial it.

I had the best walkie-talkies. They were Space 1999 comlocks. Some older kid down the road talked me into "boosting" their range by stripping the 9-volt connectors off and hooking up to a car battery. I can still remember the smell of the electronics burning.

I remember having batman ones and chips ones as well. Too bad i had the idiot friend who always forgot to take his finger of the button or just put the thing on lock.

I had a set but the range was so limited that you could hear your friend talking sometimes without the receiver! LOL
Also one Christmas my Grams bought my two cousins (brothers) and me each a matching Radio Shack walkie talkie. They lived in a different city than I did so what was I supposed to do with ONE walkie talkie??
