I don't know the answer because I'm really not into collecting them but I'm wondering as supply increases over the next few years for the harder to find cards as older collectors die, will the prices start decreasing as newer collectors will be unwilling to pay big bucks for a Mickey Mantle rookie for example because they were never alive to see him play.

I don't know the answer to that but am just speculating.

With the stock market in the tank, I have noticed a huge resurgence in coin collecting (especially older silver coins). I collect coins here and there but not to any great extent.

Most of my friends who collect generally tell me they don't collect newer commeratives but will pay big bucks for high quality older Morgans for example. It doesn't make sense to me on some level. I have a friend who will spend $4,000 on a high grade Morgan silver dollar but would be unwilling to plunk down $450 for a 1/2 ounce 24 karat gold coin that has a lower production than the Morgans.
I'm sure they'll go down.most collectors now that I know rather buy insert new cards that are really limited to the older ones

I've been collecting '70's cards for a few years just because those are the ones I had as a kid. However I've noticed that they can be easily reproduced (at least some years). This has soured me from collecting (even older sets) because I'm not sure how to tell a real card from a repro. :(

I love the 70s cards to with 74 thru 77 be my favs due to those were the yesr i collected big time as a kid, About counterfits unless it's a 53 Mantle i wouldn't worry about pre 80s cards as most of the counterfits are 80s cards like M JORDAN'S rookie 84 fleer traded Roger Clemens 82 topps traded Cal Ripken jr RC these are the most counterfited
