As a serious music fan and musician who's in a rut, I was thinking about who I would put in my top five or six all-time favorites. I was considering those who inspired me and made a musical connection with. I come from a progressive/metal background, so a few of these guys on my list will be unfamiliar to you. I'm curious to hear other perspectives.
Steve Walsh/Kansas - Pure, heartfelt and down to earth vocals. He was adaptable to many musical styles.
Dennis DeYoung/Styx - My favorite singer, period. He has influenced me more than any other and has the clearest voice in rock. He's only gotten better with age, unlike Walsh. Yes, I'm a Styx fan. I proudly proclaim that one.
Tommy Shaw/Styx - Yup, anotehr Styx dude. Like Walsh, his vocals are earthy, soulful and his melodies are perfectly matched to the songs subject material.
Rik Emmitt/Triumph - He's almost a carbon copy of Steve Walsh with similar range, pitch and tone.
Geoff Tate/Queensryche - Operatic. Best projection and power possibly ever.
Khan/Kamelot - He's got the best of all the above with his phrasing, vibrato and delivery. His emoting and ennunciation are flawless and unrivaled.
Ray Alder/Fates Warning - Second favorite here. His smooth tone and soulful timbre makes any tune. You seriously feel any song he does.
