    old time phone pre-fix

Do you know what the old style pre-fix was (is) for your town?

For my town its EVergreen 4.
The first two letters = the numbers you have now (EV = 38)

I don't know about Oakland, but in NYC in my old neighborhood, it was Wadsworth. WA7-9418 or 927-4518.

Never used phone numbers like that in my remembrance but I know what you're talking about. My Mom grew up in the 50's and I remember her telling me that their phone number was only 3 or 4 digits total! It was a small village south of Buffalo. By the time I remember phone numbers they were 7 digits. Of course now there are so many (here in AZ) that we have to dial the area code too for some local numbers.

You see them use the old pre-fix in old movies, I think they may have used them in some of the old Superman tv shows.

I Never would have thought there was enough intrest for a list to be out there, but than again if I'm intrested there probibly are others.
( I use google at least 12 times aday)

The reason I started was because I have a vintage payphone with the 3 coin slots on top. I wanted the little card in the center to have the old look with my phone number on it.

I remember after watching I Love Lucy, I asked my mom about those old time prefixes. (I think Lucy's was Murray Hill 7).
