Actually, I think Vader's helmet was made with props from the war department, German helmet, gas mask, that sort of stuff

Perhaps the actual physical props...but the idea and look comes from George Lucas' vision of the Japanese Samurai...he said he was greatly influenced by Akira Kurosawa as well.

The Jedi is also influenced from Samurai (Kendo).

The Stormtroopers are obviously influenced from Germans...that is true...as well as the military imperial uniforms.

I alway thought it liked like Darth Vader Head. If I remember correctly the eye/windows go all the way around in most episodes. I seems to remember one or two episodes were there were just in the front.

Black Manta does have a black ship that does travel underwater that holds several hundred men though.
