    Did Springsteen rip off Kiss?

Interesting that the first song on his new LP is eerily similar to Kiss's hit "I was made for Lovin' you". The chord arrangements and even some of the vocal approaches are similar. Here's a Youtube video showing those similarities.

Is he ripping Kiss off or perhaps trying to kick up some easy press for himself by tempting Gene to say something about it? Personally I don't think there's quite enough there to sue on, but it's safe to say he was heavily influenced by the tune.

Springsteen is an artist of impeccable character and originality. There are only so many chord progressions possible within the pop-rock framework, so it might have just happened by accident, that is without Bruce realizing he was writing a note structure that another artist had already recorded. "IWMFLY" was a very popular song in its day, and Springsteen might have simply had the song in his head without realizing where it came from.

This sounds very much like another case...

"His subconscious knew it already had worked in a song his conscious did not remember... That is, under the law, infringement of copyright, and is no less so even though subconsciously accomplished."

As a musician, I must add that sometimes when you are writing a song, that sometimes you do wander into other people's territory. With the arrangement of chords, scales and rhythm, eventually things like this happen.
              Do they sound alike? Yeah.

as Joe90 pointed out, yes there was another case like this when George Harrison was sued by The Chiffons for his song, "My Sweet Lord" that sounded like their song, "He's so fine".

They eventually ruled that George Harrison may have subconsciously ripped it off and he had to cough up some cash.

Most likely, Gene Simmons won't even notice or care about his song. Most likely just a really big coincidence.

              My two cents.

There's clearly a similarity in that riff, but I'm sure it's incidental. What would be the point of ripping it off? Outlaw Pete is an eight minute song that will never be played on any terrestrial radio station. In other words, it was never intended to be a "hit".

You can hear all of Outlaw Pete here, and eventually that riff pretty much disappears as the song develops anyway.

In my opinion, it's pretty obvious he is "borrowing" from I was made for loving you.

In this clip he even does a bit of the do-do-do part like Paul does in the song.

You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...

In order to save yourself from copyright infringement don't you need to only change it by like 35% to successfully rip something off?

Not saying he is or isn't just curious I thought I heard that somewhere.
“When you say “It’s hard”, it actually means “I’m not strong enough to fight for it”. Stop saying its hard. Think positive!”
