We stopped for a burger coming back from Pa today, it was a place called Vic and Sals. Its was a flash back going inside ,it just looked like something I've seen before.I asked the guy at the counter what it use to be.He said it was a Hardee's for a lot of years untill they closed, and a Burger Chef before that.Bingo!!That was the flashback. We had a Burger Chef in town growing up,long before McDonalds ever came around. It was really cool.I think our Burger Chef closed in 83 or 84.And this place looked just like what I remebered of ours.It was kinda neat seeing this place was still cooking up burgers after all this time, even though under another name.Burgers were really good.Did anybody else have a Burger Chef growing up?

Sounds like one of those made up names they use for products or brand names on tv shows, movies & comic books.
You know, like Frosted Sugar Bombs, Wally World, Soder-Cola, etc.
I seem to remember a hamburger joint similar to the early McDonald's called Harvey's that I've never heard anyone mention before and I'm 99.99999% sure it wasn't Hardee's.

We had a Burger Chef in Howell, NJ when I was growing up. I thought it was just a place in my town, I never knew there were so many.
My cousin and I ate there quite a few times. It wasn't great and it wasn't bad. It was pretty much standard fast food slop. They did have a "make your own burger" stand. That was cool.
The site is actually still there-it's now a Boston Chicken (speaking of fast food slop).Comment

Here's a Star Wars ad for Burger Chef. I remember it well.

Burger Chef was an American fast-food restaurant chain founded in 1954 in Indianapolis, Indiana. The chain expanded throughout the United States, and at its peak, it was second only to McDonald's in the number of locations nationwide. The chain featured several signature items such as the Big Shef and Super Shef burgers.
After experiencing financial troubles in the 1980s, the chain was gradually sold off to Hardee's. The final Burger Chef closed in 1996, but many of the chain's restaurants survive as Hardee's or various other fast-food establishments.
Burger Chef was also notable for pioneering the children's meal with toy combination, called the "Funmeal". This was later adopted by McDonald's as the Happy Meal. Burger Chef was also among the first companies to offer Star Wars-related premiums when the original Star Wars was released in 1977. The Burger Chef Funmeal consisted of a paperboard tray that kept a burger, fries, soft drink and toy in cut-outs designated for each. A pop-up background completed the tray. Also offered as a Funmeal in the 1980s was a thin, plastic, two- piece boat that separated in the middle. Food was placed inside this plastic boat when Funmeals were ordered. Other Fun Meal premiums offered thin plastic "records", which played an episode of the adventures of Burger Chef and Jeff, as well as a plastic token that could be redeemed at the end of the meal for a frozen treat similar to a Popsicle.

We had a Burger Chef when I was a kid in Western PA. Burger Chef & Jeff were the mascots. They had one of the first salad bars in the area, around 1975 or so, and I remember getting Star Wars toys there.
Boy, I recall hamburgers being $.19 and cheeseburgers $.29...God I am so old.
Now did anyone else have a RED BARN restaraunt?Comment

Loved the Red Barn onion rings as a kid.
I remember eating at a Burger Chef and not knowing the salad bar was supposed to be paid for. I thought it was for things to put onto my burger. When I got back to the table, with a burger wrapper piled with lettuce and salad stuff, my mom told me what it was and I felt embarrassed. I think I was six or seven years old. It's all good!Comment

My mom would only go up and get this really tiny little salad because she didn't want people to think we were greedy.
Now I see guys coming back from the salad bar with 3 or 4 plates balanced Dr. Seuss -like on top of bread & pie.
I forgot to say the Burger Chef motto: "THEY'RE INCREDI-BURGABLE!!"
Here's a link to a Burger Chef treasure trove. I started this link to the page with the Star Wars funmeals on it, but you can branch out from there:

The Red Barn was a great place, I really miss that one. I was amazed to see how much collectible stuff from the chain goes for on Ebay!

This page, halfway down has a picture of what used to be the Red Barn I knew in College Park, MD. page8
It actually was just to the left of a huge Toys R Us. The very same TRU where I got my Big S supes, RM Robin, and RC Bats.
I specifically remember one time getting a Lakeside Gumby bendy and then stopping there for the previously mentioned onion rings. It's all good!Comment
