YouTube - Tony Clifton at Harrah's

A quite insightful vintage piece on Kaufman's chase of "suckiness"
          through Tony Clifton.

including an inteview with "Tony Clifton" himself.

          The "kicker" here?

By this point Kaufman had stopped playing Clifton and handed the character
over to his friend Bob Zmuda without ANYone being the wiser.

Like I said...not much of a fan of the act iitself...but the EFFORT
and PHILOSOPHY was quite intriguing to me.

I love Andy Kaufman. He was an artist. He made art out of people's outrage. He's dead and you still hate him. He wins.

Kaufman is hard for me to describe without sounding cheesy or like a stoner. I liked his childlike wonder and experimentation. True to himself and if people had a laugh along the way or despised his antics it was just a bonus. Comedy was maybe just an easy outlet for what he was doing. Or maybe he was just goofing around.

I think Kauffman was a genious. I remember watching this show called Fridays' (which was a copycat of Saturday Night Live) when I was a kid. In the middle of a live skit he stood up in the middle and refused to read his lines. He was skilled at making people hate him. If you fell for it, that's what he wanted. He figured the joke was on you.

                      What if Joaquin is:

                      1. Actually quitting acting to be a (reportedly awful) hip-hop singer?

                      2. Contractually obligated to promote his last film, which he made prior to his decision to quit?

                      3. Rebelling against that contractual obligation the only way he can: By being "absent" during the already mind-numbing rounds of press interviews and talk show appearances?

                      Anyway, it's food for thought.

Oh, and since we're on the subject, I loved Kaufman and thought he was a genius, too. But I'm not a fan of the Mighty Mouse sketch.

Never thought he was funny either. Didn't hate him though. Pretty much indifferent to him. I guess I found the whole thing just kinda boring.
You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...

I always thought the Mighty Mouse sketch was hilarious. And I enjoyed Taxi a lot, so I had no problem with Kaufman. And plus I was always a big Letterman fan, so Kaufman's apperances on Late Night were always good for crazy fun. The most famous of course being:
