    Question #1 for follow members in the UK.

    For a long time I had a few questions about the UK, trouble when you watch BBC programs/comedies.
    Can should one explain Britains money make up; how many pence make a shillin, how many shillin to a pound. I would like the current format plus the one from the 1950 before it was changed to the current. Also, I heard money expressed as as the following: a bob, a crown, a half a crown, a guine, a quid, a sovereign. What are there values. Do pardon my spelling

      The current format is that 100 pence makes one pound.

      There are 8 coins to be had.......

      one pence
      two pence
      five pence
      ten pence
      twenty pence
      fifty pence
      one pound
      two pound

      They then become paper money

      five pound note
      ten pound note
      twenty pound note
      fifty pound note.

      I'm doing this from memory as nobody in the UK has any money anymore.

        I think a shilling was five pence before decimalisation in the early 70s.
        A `quid` is slang for the current one pound coin as is a `sovereign` but this probably is taken from the really old gold sovereign coins because the current one pound coin is gold in colour.

          Exactly,
          He's asking for what your slang money terms mean.

          Example, a few United States terms

          "buck" = 1 dollar
          "two bits" = 25 cents
          "sawbuck" = 10 dollars
          'C-note" = 100 dollars
          etc.

            A bob is the same as a shilling, today this would be 5 pence.

            A Crown was 5 shillings, today 25 pence

            A half crown was 2 shillings 6 pence, today 12 or 13 pence.

            A Guinea was 1 pound plus 1 shilling

            A Quid is slang for a pound

            A Sovereign is gold bullion and so is worth ( literally ) it's weight in gold.
