^^^ A lot of businesses work week revolves around getting mail service during the week, so I doubt that's going to fly either. Maybe the Feds need to come up with a few more holidays. They already manage at least one a month, sometimes more.

As a UK postman it is very interesting to read this. We have been saying for years that the saturday delivery service should be stopped here as Royal mail are constantly trying to cut costs. Apparently we are tied by legislation called the `Universal Service Obligation` which in short means that there is a delivery six days a week. However `universal` is a loose term as some of you have already stated that you don't get mail on a saturday.
The costs that could be cut would be massive, a days less fuel, electricity and so on. We already work 5 days a week so we have have cover staff to cover the sixth day - again all these costs could be cut.
If the USPS did manage it then it may open the door for us. The only thing that I really hate about my job is working Saturdays when my family is at home.
Interesting point about Tuesdays. The UK postal network is much quieter on a Tuesday also.

Through rain, snow, sleet or gloom of night, the mail must get through....But not on Tuesday/Saturday or Sunday.

For me it mostly means another day without junk mail.

For me it just means the likelihood that I'll send an international package just dropped to slim and none. If they're not open Saturdays, I won't be able to stand in the ridiculous line to send my int'l package. It really robs me of an opportunity to hang with people who are too dim to step over to the kiosks and complete a two minute transaction without the help of the person behind the counter. The best is when I get behind seven consecutive grandmas who want to send a package to Timmy. I'll miss it - say it ain't so.

I say compromise do away w/Saturday house to house delivery but keep the offices open so that people that aren't able to do PO business throughout the week have the opportunity.

Yeah, I do see that on a lot of Ebay auctions- "I only ship Saturdays". I'm guessing the offices would remain open the half day or so they already are.

Tell me if this is screwed up ......

I live in an apartment complex in a very small town.

We don't have community mailboxes in the complex.

Because of this, everyone who lives in the apartments get's a free post office box.

Our PO is about 1/3rd mile away (very close)

For the last 5 years my apartments and the local PO has been fighting that we should have apartment community boxes in the complex (like most apts do)

The complex refuses to put them in saying --- it's the post offices responsibility to pay for them.... esimated cost in $12.000.000

The post office says the opposite... It's the apts who should pay.

This has been going on for 5 years now.

Finally, this year the PO got fed up and is now CHARGING us for our PO boxes.
                $50.00 a year

I did some research to see if this is legal ....

Apparently it is BECAUSE we do still have a free PO box somewhere ......
It's in the next town (5-miles away)

                Is that screwed up ?

How the hell do they pull that off? I sat on a board of a 100 unit condo development for 5 years and there's no way the PO would have given us free PO boxes if we didn't have the community boxes.

The complex refuses to put them in saying --- it's the post offices responsibility to pay for them.... esimated cost in $12.000.000

And they should. Why should people in large apartment complexes be treated different than say someone living in a 3 story apartment building? The mailman doesn't climb three flights to deliver his mail and also doesn't pay for his mailbox at the curb.

Finally, this year the PO got fed up and is now CHARGING us for our PO boxes.

I'd look at it as you got away with a freebie way longer than it should have gone and address the issue with the apartment management group.

Apparently it is BECAUSE we do still have a free PO box somewhere ......

Butte, Montana, up in the mountains. At least there aren't any lines to deal with.

                  Is that screwed up ?

Big time. Now the Post Office can charge for all those free PO boxes they've been giving out and stop raising the stamp prices for all the rest of us.

Does this happen in other areas where the PO picks up the costs for the delivery receptacle responsibility? I'd love to hear from some other areas of the country to see the regularity.

BTW I could live with 3-4 days a week mail delivery if it cut my costs. Not that I'd want to see mailmen laid off but if we could cut the number of new hirees as they retired or left and cut a day here and then another several years down the road to keep overall costs in line I could be OK with it. In the next 15 to 20 years every bill will be paid online anyway, so resistance is futile.

Post offices the world over engage in weird zoning policies. I live about four blocks away from a full service post office; BUT I have to go to one about 10km away to pick up a package 'cos I live right on the edge of a delivery zone.

                    >In the next 15 to 20 years every bill will be paid online anyway,

Not mine. I still go to the bank. AND I pay for my internet with a regular paper check. (I'm a BIG fan of irony.)

The only service they have at the PO near me on Saturdays is a pickup window. No counter service and the window is only open till like noon.

You'll be saying otherwise when you have to wait an extra day for your MEGO packages to arrive from eBay.

That would be messed up for me if the USPS where to stop delivering on Saturdays...that's when I get my fresh three DVDs from Netlfix for weekend viewing...bloody hell.
