I have a good friend who's a "white Mexican," a lawyer in Houston. A while back he was being considered for some award given to Hispanic legal professionals... but when he showed up at the award-givers' offices, they were shocked -- shocked! -- by his appearance. They actually did not believe he was Mexican! He assured them that yes, he grew up in Mexico and his mother is full-blooded Mexican (though his dad is white -- but he actually looks exactly like his Mexican grandfather). Nevertheless, after they saw him, he was no longer considered for the award.

That really sucks.
