This does not surprise me in the least. They Seem have increased fee's annually since about 2003/2004. Its actually getting out of control too . I have a Postal clerk tell me that would be cheaper to ship something in a rectangular box instead of a square Box. It had something to do with the Dimensions of the boxes. He mentioned that the USPS is adopting the same standards and matching prices with UPS and FEDEX.

    Grrrr...............

The one thing that kills me is the vast difference in price between states.

I kid you not ...... I had a large box weighed and to send it to California Priority it cost about $40.00
To New Jersey the same box cost was $17.00

The reason for a lot of the price changes in the last several years is due to FEDEX moving the post office's packages.

One my best friends is a postmaster and he says that the increase in cost for priority (and other types of shipping through the USPS) is due to both SIZE and WEIGHT.

When FEDEX raises their prices on the USPS, they pass it on to us.

The USPS has been using FED EX planes post 9/11. Before 9/11, the USPS used to move mail on commercial airlines. Obviously this presented a risk to the passengers of these planes, so the USPS struck a deal with Fed Ex. This is why they have shifted to a more Fed Ex style pricing system based on things like size and distance......

They were probably referring to the new flat rate box versus the standard priority mail boxes which are flatter. USPS now offers a flat rate box that is about the shape of a shoebox that is cheaper sometimes than shipping in the standard priority mail box. There would have had to be a rather large box to have the price changed by a different sized box. Though box size is a factor in determining price. Much more with the USPS than with UPS or FedEx.

They also might be referring to the volumetric pricing which kicks in, I believe, when any side of the box exceeds 12 inches. It also only kicks in at zones farther away from your location. That is why T1K was charged $40 to ship priority when he lives on the East Coast. You can avoid the charge by using the slower Parcel Post.

As you can imagine, it can make for a few headaches when shipping repro boxes. It used to be that shipping repro boxes was reliably inexpensive even for larger ones because they are light.

Now, I have to consider where it is being shipped to and how large the final shipping box needs to be. I'm in New York, and if someone in NYC wants a large Star Wars box, the priority shipping is not likely to be much more than $6. But if someone on the west coast wants the same box, shipping would be in the at least $15 and as much as $25 (based upon the shipping box I think would protect such a larger box but with the weight still being within 1 to 2 pounds). Parcel post would make it around $8.

Well, I know I lost at least one sale due to this, from a guy on this board that really seemed interested but lives in California. Even after I suggested parcel post, it just put his fire out for the whole thing. I don't know if he thinks I was trying to rip him off or what. It would've been for a 12" Boba Fett box with is I think is 15" inches tall (the box). Anyway I slice it, it's big shipping charges because of the size. Needless to say, it's very frustrating.
