Since I dug up Mitch's old "worst" song thread, I thought I'd gauge you on a more positive note.
So what's your favorite of the standards?
1. Silent Night: I have to go with either Bing Crosby or John Denver and the Muppets on this one.
2. O Holy Night: Josh Groban does a great job on this. Michael Crawford (not Captain Toy, but the Phantom of the Opera guy) also does a stirring rendition.
3. The First Noel: Andy Williams
4. White Christmas: Bing...duh!
5. The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting...): Nat King Cole, double-duh!
6. Little Drummer Boy: Non-traditional, but I like Bob Seger's version!
7. Santa Claus is Coming to Town: I like Fred Astaire's take from the classic TV special, but Sinatra's version is cool.
8. Here Comes Santa Claus: The King baby...Elvis.
9. God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen: Barenaked Ladies and Sara McLaughlin. It's actually a medly with "We Three Kings", but I love it.
10. Rudolph: Either the Gene Autry original or the Dean Martin version. Burl Ives is a close second, or third.
11. The Most Wonderful Time of the Year: Andy Williams, who I think first recorded it.
12. No Place Like Home for the Holidays: Perry Como
13: Sleigh Ride: Whichever version has all that whip-cracking in it. Ray Connif maybe?
14. Frosty: I like Willie Nelson's take
15. Blue Christmas: Elvis...or Semyour Swine.
A lot of these are determined by the vinyl albums we used to play every Christmas. We wore out the Muppet/Denver Christmas album, Andy Williams and Perry Como. Most of these were my mom's old records.
That's off the top of my head. Your favorites?
Chris
