Good questions, I would say the early 50's for the story. The decoder ring and the beebee gun were pretty big then. Not too sure about the store.

Yeah John that's what I first thought, but all the cars seem to be from the 40's and I can't see any one from the 50's but I could've missed it I guess.

What about "It runs in the family" anyone see that? it's suppose to be part 2 to a Christmas Story, even has a few of the kids from the Original,I've never seen it.just wondering if it was any good ?

I'm almost certain that the store is real and is still in the same place today as when they filmed it. I saw a short documentary about the movie and some guy had bought the actual house used for exterior shots and had the inside gutted and rebuilt to reflect the movie layout. I believe it's being preserved now as a kind of museum. I wish I could remember what the show was called that I saw.

UPDATE ABOUT THE REMODEL & THE STORE: I just searched Google and found these.

Higbees was a department store in downtown Cleveland from 1931 until 1992. You can read about it here --

                On a semi-related note:
I ran across a website not too long ago and it's a bed & breakfast or somesuch type of place that is a replica of Aunt Bee's (Andy Griffith's) house from the TV series. I believe it's in North Carolina, too.
Actually i found it. It's in wisconsin.

Not a *whole* different cast -- of all the bizarre things, the teacher's the same actress in both . . .

But overall, the second movie was painful -- Grodin can be funny, but following up McGavin in one of his most memorable roles, he's just awful.

Are you talking about My summer Story about the fishing trip?

While not as good as A Christmas story it is just as funny if you ever took a fishing trip with your dad. But Charles Grodin can't hold a candle to Darrn Mcgavin as the father

jean Smart was basically retelling his own childhood experinces it just happens that the child hood of kids born from 1940-1975 really weren't all that different so it touched a chord with multiple generations at once.

if you ever have the chance read the original book these films are based on In god we trust and all others pay cash there is even more stuff that is a riot that never saw celluloid

Lemme qualify my comment about "painful" -- the story's funny, and the movie itself is basically funny. But following the first . . it was painful because throughout I could see how *wonderful* it would've been with the cast from the 1st (and if it had been released soon enough after it that Ralphie wasn't shaving yet).

Yeah, the sequel was released with two different names. I think one of the (other) Culkin kids plays Ralphie? It's okay, but you definitely pine for Billingsly and McGavin.

Speaking of Billingsly, he has a cameo in Four Christmases with Vince Vaughn. I haven't seen the movie yet, but he's the guy at the airport who tells Vaughn and Witherspoon that all flights are canceled. He may be involved in the production of the movie. His production partner Jon Favreau is in it too. Billingsly was a producer on Iron Man. Ralphie has done good for himself! No blindness from soap poisoning or anything!!!
