    Joe Satriani sues Coldplay

    Coldplay facing plagiarism lawsuit

An American rock guitarist has filed a lawsuit against British group Coldplay, accusing the popular band of plagiarising one of his songs on their latest hit album, according to court documents.

Joe Satriani, known for his instrumental compositions, alleges Coldplay's song "Viva la Vida" had "copied and incorporated substantial original portions" from his own track "If I Could Fly" recorded on an album released in 2004.

Satriani's lawsuit demands damages and "any and all profits" related to the alleged copyright infringement.

A representative for the band was not immediately available for comment.

Coldplay's latest album "Viva la Vida," released in June, has topped the charts in Europe and the United States.

The recording helped Coldplay win seven nominations for the 2009 Grammy awards.

Don't read this as a defense of Coldplay and let me state that I like Joe Satriani's stuff, but when it comes to uncredited use of intellectual property, I know you all know this about Joe:

(regarding Satriani's Album "Surfing With the Alien)

The album cover depicts the Marvel Comics character the Silver Surfer on the front and the hand of Galactus on the back. The image is from Silver Surfer #1 (1982). The artist, John Byrne, has noted that the image was used without Marvel's permission and that he has never received payment for its use. The art is lifted from panel 1 of page 6 of SILVER SURFER #1 published in 1982.

Yeah, I get that and they have no defense, but......I just find it a little ironic.

^^ The record cover rights issue is more than likely the art director or the label's problem. I doubt Satriani deals with all the legalities of that.

I get that, too and I'm not saying he's a bad dude because of the Silver Surfer thing, but still he's associated with something where someone didn't get paid for what they created.

And by the way, I love Joe Satriani, I'm just saying I find it a little ironic.

Satriani should get the Grammy if it wins.

It shouldn't win anything, its crap. And after the whole Milli Vanilli thing, I bet the grammy people won't give it to a plagerized song.
