    Cheap DVD player question

    Hey guys,

I just bought a cheap DVD player.
It was on sale for $19.99 at Shop-Rite (a local grocery store)

    The brand name is "Classic"

Whenever I try and play a BURNED DVDr the sound and video (after about 5 minutes of play) trails off from eachother.
If I stop it or FF, it's ok for 5 more minutes -- then it messes up again.

Most of my DVD's are burns, so this is not good.

    Question,
Is this particular DVD player broken ?
Or, does it just not like DVDr's ?

I'm asking because I want to know if I should take it back for a refund -- or get another one and try it again.

DVD players without progressive scan sometime have problems with burned DVDs or it could be the DVDs Burn process. I have 3 burned DVDs that used to work great in my DVD player, but now don't. 2 only have sound sometime you play them and the third, the DVD player no longer recognizes as a DVD.

Best Buy has an Insignia DVD for $30. It says it plays DVD-R and DVD+R. I haven't tried it but maybe something like that would work.

I wish I buy VCR/DVD with record for VHS and one record burner disk for DVD. I need to copy DVD disks into video tapes then selling video tapes and keep DVD disks. The VCR/DVD record/bunner is VERY expensive! It went around $200 -$399 all stores!!!

I'll trying to finding that one on ebay or at Flea Markets, Thrift shops and Goodwill stores with a very good deal but I'll check that to see if it's working or not before I buy it.

All you need is the VHS VCR you already have, a good DVD recorder (roundabout $100) and a copyguard filter/stabilizer (something like this)

Digital Video Stabilizer - eBay (item 330289689249 end time Dec-02-08 16:26:55 PST)

And you can convert all the tapes you want to DVD. That stabilizer will not work to copy store bought DVD's though as they have additional copy protections than the VHS.

Oh man, I remember those video stabilizers, they were invaluable to me back in the VHS days. I think I still have one packed away somewhere.

As someone mentioned, with DVD players you usually get what you pay for. Burned DVDs are bit more "labor intensive" for a DVD player to play properly, so the really cheap ones could very well have sync problems like this. I'd take it back (it would probably break in a few months anyway )
