    Information Overload.

I know this started in the Nostalgia thread but I think it deserves its own. Its amazing to look at all the changes we've been through.

Think about it. When we were kids we listened to songs on the radio/tape/record. When we were teens we had music videos. Now we were listening to the music and paying attention to the video. (which usually had nothing to do with the music). As adults we had pop up video. Not only listening to the music and watching the video but reading 50 new trivia bits too.

Remember when news was just news. Now we all like CNN . We can watch the news story and read about 5 other stories as they ticker tape across the bottom of the screen... along with the stock market results.

My kids can sit in their rooms with the TV on, Ipod in the ears, on the laptop while texting on their cel phones.

    It boggles the mind.
Lo there do I see my Father.
Lo there do I see my Mother and my Sisters and my Brothers.
Lo there do I see the line of my people back to the begining.
    Lo they do call me.
They bid me take my place among them.
In the halls of Valhalla where the brave may live forever.

But like Kahn said ........ Oh, there has been technical advancement, but, uh, how little man himself has changed.

    Which is so true.

Compared to the last generation and the one before that --- we're just kids with new toys.

When I'm faced with too many choices I seem to always choose the simplest one. An example would be walking into Baskin-Robbins, looking at a hundred different ice creams and choosing vanilla. Or spending 1/2 hour looking at the channel that tells you what's on the other channels.

        Hmmmm....

I kinda feel that all the new access to info hasn't really CHANGED things. It DOES give us a lot more of the same, but it hasn't changed too much. Instead of discussing the game with guys at work, we do it online with people from the other side of the planet. But it's STILL the same old conversation. Well.... HALF a conversation since we lose a lot of the non-verbal communication online.

How many people use the internet to download movies they could see anywhere; or music that's currently being played everywhere?

...or conversely, spending an hour flipping between a hundred channels trying to find something better to watch....then cant remember what channel you started on to finish watching the garbage you were watching before you started looking for something better.

Heh, yeah, that one is killer. When I was a kid we had a handful of channels we could tune in with the dial. Now we have hundreds, but the weird part is, for the most part I still watch those exact same stations I used to dial in 30 plus years ago and the rest I just pass through. The biggest difference is now I PAY big money to get those channels, just like I pay for a bottle of water and I pay for a whole bunch of other things that used to be free. That's another topic though.

Many many years ago, when I went to Kenya for the first time in my life, they had two channels, and the TV had a remote. My father in law used to flip the channel up or down. Up or down. It drove me nuts. And, he used to blast the tv, as if making it louder would make me understand Swahili. Yeah. Right...
