Glad to hear you're okay, John. You're right about getting checkups and also taming those urges and desires. It's damned hard.

I usually have a couple beers or a couple glasses of wine every night, and have done that for years. I just decided to stop for a while and see what that feels like. In just 5 days, my belly is shrinking and my mind is clearer and more active at night.

Our choices make such a difference, it's so easy to forget that.

    Your vital signs are great.

I too have normal glucose and blood pressure readings...but my cholesterol is slowly creeping up...it's now at 190.

I too have cut down on fast foods...but I still frequent them twice a week.

On the soda...I think the fizz is what you would miss the most...I recommend getting mineral water like Perrier and add just a tad of fruit juice...it tastes great.

Excellent post and topic. I had my own scare this Summer with diabetes.

I was diagnosed in August with type2, which kind of made me chuckle being a Mego guy. You gotta find humor in some of this dreary stuff. Anyway, I completely eliminated sugar from my diet. No candy, cookies, soda nothing. I cut out white bread, pasts and rice as they metabolize into sugar in the bloodstream. Simply by doing that, I've dropped 55 pounds and have loads of energy now that my body is producing it's own.

I've still got another 40 or so to go, but I think the hardest part is behind me. I wholeheartedly concur with the teach. Get stuff checked out now. MOst people have no idea they are diabetic, and when they finally find out, it's too late to repair the damage done. Put machoism aside and see a physician. It saved my life.

    Just got my physical results

Since I thought I was having a stroke this summer I took it upon myself to get a full physical. Besides being fat (which I already knew) I guess I'm in ok shape.
I had a heart ultrasound which was normal, Blood pressure is 130/80 which for my age is ok. My bloodsugar was 84 which is good and my cholesterol was 168, a real surprise. I thought it would be high. I has my curroted (sp, the two on your neck) scanned and I'm happy to say they are plaque free! I'll tell you the scare I had this summer made me reevaluate a lot. I LOVED smoking cigars. Garagesale and Juan can vouch for me on that. At mego meet I smoked too damn many. Well I haven't had one since July. I also slowed way down on the fast food. Mickeydees or fast food only once every two weeks for me. Also no more regular soda. Boy I miss my regular Pepsi but seeing my Lizzy grow up a lot more important to me than any sugary drink. I'm writing this to encourage each and every one of you to get a check up. Many of you I consider good friends and believe it or not would miss a lot if you were gone. We are not young any more. Get a check-up for the sake of your wife and kids. I had a wake up I don't want any of you to live through so see the doctor. I was like many here and was scared to see a doctor for fear they would find something. My doctor told me that almost always if you feel ok when you get a check up and they find something it can be fixed of stopped. Well enough of my rant, Just remember I hope you all know I say these things because I truly care about our community and the people in it.
